Dan Lurie of FYD amps in Burlington VT just finished this custom hand built beauty for me. A real pleasure working with him. Its octal preamped and can be powered with 6L6's, 6550's or KT88's. I'm currently running the KT's @ 70W. I will surely roll some tubes as I go along. In tweed mode its like a boutique/tweeked 53 Bassman with simple tone and volume controls. Tons of fat sweet overtones, and punchy gain, but not a modern hi gain amp. The non tweed mode is like a better than fender boutique/tweeked blackface tone stack with a mid sweep, lower gain, and nearly silent noise floor. Clean in both modes with loads of character. Both modes provide the touch sensitity that we love from octal tubes. Outputs are 8 and 4(X2) ohms.

See it has a mid level and mid shift control too. Pretty cool design with lots of neat features.

I've had mine for about 2 months: wicked good!
Give it a month to loosen up John.

Looks great !!
I just converted one channel of my custom made steel amp to octal and the difference is substantial. Sort of more of everything except harshness in the treble...
Octals love pedal steel !

Someone was asking about this amp on another forum, here is my post:

I own one, have had it for about a month. Its been played a lot at home and out also. It's great for pedal steel. I don't own a Little Walter, but I have other octal amps and a 5B6 handwired preamp, so I cannot provide a direct comparison. The tweed mode of Dan's amp is like a bright and higher powered 5B6, and probably a lot like the LW, but not with as big a bottom end. Its a very good one trick pony in that mode, with volume and tone controls only. I find this to be the case with the 5B6 pre and Ampeg amps too. Great tweed sound, minimal tone shaping, but enough to sound great. I love it for single note stuff, but for me not a panacea. I am very glad to have the option to switch to the modified Blackface mode, which is about 25-30% lower gain, but sweeter, and with much more tone shaping, cleaner and better bottom end. The sweepable mid is great! This is where I want to be when the focus is on chord voicings, as the separation is better. The feel and note release of the octal tubes in both modes is great, very expressive, and why we love em. I played a very noisy event last week: about 500 people talking, eating, dancing in a big harsh room. The ambient noise level was probanly 80-90 db before the band kicked in. I had to play much louder than I like to, and much louder than is normal for me. I was grateful for every one of the claimed 70W of KT88 power. I could have rolled a higher gain preamp tube tor even more, but did not feel the need. 50W would not have provided enough clean headroom. Dan informs that I can roll 6L6's, 6550's into the power amp besides the stock KT88's. I have not done so as I love the KT sound. I will be looking for upgrade KT's with a bigger bottom end bloom. The preamp section can use 6SN7 or 6SL7 tubes. (the 6SL7's are a tad hot in tweed mode, but do kick the Blackface mode into Twin killer territory). the amp is very compact and light weight for what it is. I am very happy with it. I found Dan to be very responsive to calls and emails, and was a pleasure to work with.

John,
Thanks for the report. This amp looks intriguing.
By the way, your new avatar is only slightly less creepy than your last one. Smile

Thanks Jack, I've actually had the "creepy" filter for my avatar set pretty high, but I do like to have a little fun with them...keep watching. Ha ha!

Best always, JW
