I'm thinking about changing the tarnished gold pickup covers on my Samick jazzbox with humbuckers.

Any tips? Would they be soldered on? Big job, little job? Are they pretty much the same size regardless of manufacturer say, Asian, genuine Gibson etc.?

They can vary in size from one make to the other...I've only messed with Gibson and Seymour Duncan pickups...never have tried either of those on the other...those two have the covers soldered on either side with a blob of solder, not too hard to get off.

Jerry,I think they charge more for the"aged"covers than the shiny ones!

Measure your covers and compare them with the ones you want to buy...you should be ok.

Get chrome ones...I have three Les Pauls with nickel covers and they are all tarnished...got two more with chrome ones that still look new.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the help Steve. So, obviously the pickups have to come out to unsolder the covers eh?

I'm not too fond of it, but all the hardware on this guitar is gold so I was figuring on replacing them with the same color. Seems that the gold ones seems to tarnish quickly like the nickel you mentioned.

Anyway, I guess the thing to do is pull them out to match up the proper size. Thanks JO.
FWIW it's this Korean built L5 style arch top.

Yes,gotta come out to take'em off,if they are like Gibsons!

That gold is the worst,as far as not holding up...just about any old Les Paul Custom you see has the gold about gone...both my LPCs have chrome hardware, and it still looks new!

I like my guitars beat up looking...I'd leave'em like they are!

Good luck whichever way you go,Jerry!

Yeah....well, I don't know. Good point. The rest of the gold plated hardware shows some fading too, but not as bad as the covers. They look really grungy. Still, new covers might stick out like a sore thumb by comparison.....thinking it over.

Appreciate the input.
