I don't think there are any true steel guitar factorys. No, not even five. I would consider them to be steel guitar shops. With that said lets remember that Apple conputers were started in a garage by two students, so was HP computers, so was servicemaster,to name a few. We all know wewre these compants have gone. They are still here supporting there products. So if you are building guitars out of the trunk of your car and it's a good product and people are buying it. I say keep building it and one day you may be the Apple computer of the steel guitar world, and have the first steel guitar factory.

Very intresting Bob,Maybe you have a point,There are no steel guitar factorys, and compared to auto, guitar,TV,computer and furniture factorys, youv'e got to be correct. However , what about the steel "factorys" that are paying for all the things that define them as being a business? Business phones cost more than "home" phones,Business locations cost more than residential realestate.I'spose it's OK not to pay any business taxes if you can get away with it,they sure dont make the guitar sound any better, or thats what most of you are saying,Right? Remember, the guitar isn't any less expensive if it's a home made one. It may not be any worse either, who knows or really cares,I just asked the question in the first place to do a human nature test check on the basic honesty of the human race and attitude toward goverment controls on businesses. Boy, I've found out a lot. Some said that nothing could be learned from this post, sorry for those folks. If they can't learn from this, they can't learn from anything and proved it with that
statment. Lets have fun, thats what steel guitars are really for,Right?
Is this a great forum or what!

Bobbe, you are right this is a great fourm. Just because some steel guitar shops pay business taxes and pay for a business phone does not make them a factory. It makes them a business.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines a factory as a building or group of buildings were goods are manufactured. By that defination every stee guitar builder has a factory.
Are children considered goods. If so I have a child factory. Ya buddy.

FWIW, there are many advantages, tax wise, in running a business/factory out of your home. A possible disadvantage to a non-factory establishment (in your home deal) is the absence of that big desk where one's arm can quickly clear the desktop for a little afternoon break. Doing that at work (at the factory) can only make you liable for a future harassment suit and higher workers comp fees especially when the victim falls of the desk and breaks a finger nail!

Aren't we just discussing semantics here?
I don't see the point, whether or not a pedal steel is made in a "factory" or someone's backyard garage/outbuildings or
in their basement.
Maybe the point is, 'how soon can the instrument be completed and delivered'?
As long as the quality and craftsmanship, playability etc. is there [and Lord knows it is], then that's all I really care about.

Well...here I go again. I'm going to skip Webster's first definition under the word "factory", 'cause it has more to do with a structure or building than anything else.
HOWEVER, the second entry under "factory" is very enlightening, even to an old bookworm/geezer like me! It says...
Guess what, I just solved the dilemma we were having!
Thusly, I can say with some confidence that 99.99% of all steels that have ever been built (or will be built) were built in a "factory"!
I'm glad I could help!

Sooooo...we can say (or rather I can say) that if you make a "standard model" steel...or anything else, buddy, you got a factory! Now if everyone you build is different, and if everyone you build is customized, and you never build one without an "order", unless it's for yourself...then I guess it's safe to say you don't have a "factory"....any place producing a uniform product, without concern for individuality...

Joe M. , the reason I get 95 responses and you would get 4 is because I know a lot more about the subject than you do. Right? What do I do for a career? What do you do for a career?
I don't think being famous has anything to do with it. I'm not sure I'm famous anyway.I met a guy two years ago from Pago Pago that wasn't sure if he knew me or not. (his wife did though!) How famous do YOU think I am?
I don't think I'm very famous. Maybe I am in Panama. I did a show there once in 1948 with my uncle Doug in the high school. We twerld ropes (larietts) , he played steel guitar with the Fox Hunters and did comedy. I just did the "Cowboy stuff". I lost in a tractor driving contest in Panama once also. I was only 6 years old,
(this response was all in fun Joe, don't get your Panama ire up)
