For those in the know- check out 'Ebbets Field' recordings on youtube, far better than their other 'Live' recording IMHO.
Great slide and grooves.

I sure do love Lowell George with Little Feat. Him and Ry Cooder and Bonnie Raitt were the original L.A. slide guitar monsters. Then of course, along came Duane. These slide heroes of the '70's deserve a lot credit for doing something original with slide. They influenced Geoge Harrison who also devloped a unique slide style. I listened to all these players for years before ever attempting to play any kind of slide myself.
So, hooray for Lowell George and Little Feat. Dixie Chicken is one of the great albums. Put it on, play it through, then put on Chicken Skin Music by Ry Cooder. To hear some great but subtle and more mature slide playing listen to Ry on Buena Vista Social Club. He gets an incredible tone out of his unique setup and sounds great.

I love Lindley too but he gets enough credit around here!

Agree there except I find Bonnie hugely influenced by Lowell and not so unique with her electric slide tone, use of compression and phrasing-and Lowell playing some electric slide on her early recordings makes identifying each of them confusing!

Lowell's use of capos and open strings with a heavey socket wrench was/is great and many a trick to be used for crossing over to lap here IMHO.

I work with a guy who was the sound man for Little Feat back in the day. He turned me on to some recordings he made through the board- what a great band, some really talented musicians in the days where a lot of the bands seemed to have trouble tuning up....

This thread , and these musical examples take me back to the time when music really meant something .......You could listen to GREAT music and know EXACTLY who was performing the music .....Great music and INDIVIDUAL performances , not like today where everybody sounds the same ......Who said you can't go home ? ....I'm there right now listenning to this music !!.....Jim

Sneaky Pete's steel playing on Little Feat's "Six Feet Of Snow", from the "Down On The Farm" record, is great.
That album and "Feats Don't Fail Me Now" & "The Last Record Album" really fire my rocket. (no pun intended).
When I worked for Robert Randolph, we were on the bill with Little Feat ( I think it was Telluride, CO).. Bill Payne and Kenny Gradney are fantastic players and it was such a treat to meet them.
There are several shows from 1975 & 1976 that are excellent. The Boston Music Hall recording aired on WBCN is one in particular that stands out.

Regarding Lowell George's slide guitar playing; that came as a result of injuring his fretting fingers while working on a gas-powered model airplane. This is documented in the booklet included in the Little Feat boxed-set, "Hotcakes & Outtakes", as well as in this Lowell George tribute article (see paragraph 17). BTW, the whole article is an interesting read for L. George and/or Feat fans:

A little aside: From what I've read in a tribute article to Richie Hayward, written by Bill Payne, keyboardist and founding member of the Feat, Richie was always insecure about his playing. He frequently asked Bill, at the end of a show, if his playing was OK and that he didn't screw up too much. Just amazing.

Nicely put there-I'm finding his songwriting, singing/delivery and slide playing to be spot on in my life right now for some reason-even though I've been listening for years. I'm only 36 and was a bub when he died but the music really moves me/speaks to me-without wanting to sound too sentimental-I feel sad at the loss of him…

Huge fan here, too...saw him live many times. For those interested in his tone, check out the Slide Rig from Origin Effects...dual stackable compressors based on the UREI 1176 studio limiters that helped Lowell get that sound. Awesome pedal, and unbelieveable build quality...check it out...
