| What other amps are there in the market designed for steel guitars besides Webb, Eavans, and Nashville 112, since the Nashville 1000 was discontinued? |

A couple of the older Peavey's were the Nashville 400, the Session 400 and the Session 500. There were also a couple of amps similar to the Nashville 400 call the Reno and the Vegas. Fender had an amp similar to the Twin called a Vibrosonic that was basically a Twin Reverb with a 15 inch speaker. This was a very good steel amp (although I'm not sure it was marketed as a steel amp per se). Walker makes an amp called the stereo steel...although I am not sure it if is still made.

| You can still find NV400's and 1000's come available occasionally. The NV112 is still in production. A lot of guys are liking the Roland Cube 80XL. Other than the one's you mentioned (and I'm not too sure the Webb is still being made, someone correct me if I'm wrong), you have several options if you want to go with a rack system. There you can go with Stereo Steel, LeMay, Telonics and Sarno units to name a few. |

I was reading another thread about the Webb amps and you are correct Roger....I don't think they are being made any longer. Although I had the opportunity several years ago to play a Nashville 400 with the Tantalum Caps and all of the other upgrades done to it side by side with a Webb and if you were blindfolded...I don't think you could have told the difference between the two.
I would really like to hear a Roland Cube 80xl with steel. I like the idea of a light weight amp that has good power. I also play bass and happen to use a GK MB200 for my bass rig. I have been using the MB200 with a 210 bass cabinet made by Ashdown along with a Holy Grail reverb and a DD3 and I can't get over how good this setup sounds. Neither the amp nor the cab were built for pedal steel....but it seems to work.

I have a Jansen Steel 100. This is basically a 100W Mosfet Bass head modified for steel and a 15" vented cabinet. Ca. 20 years ago I bought this from NZ.
Optically the system resembles the ones mentioned already.
I believe the company has stopped producing them, but some might be around.

Standel still makes two models for pedal steel. Both are 100 watts, and both still use tubes. The price, though, at around 4 grand, tends to keep away all but the most serious and well-heeled players. 
While the NV 1000 has been discontinued, there's still some new ones for sale at select stores. |

Fred Justice had a little combo that had one of his speaker cabinets with several rack spaces added to accomodate a Stereo Steel amp and an effects unit. He had a couple at the SWSGA show that were real nice sounding and not too heavy. I think Fender still makes the SteelKing.
Some folks like that amp but I've always thought it sounded harsh. Could just be my ears though. |

...and don't forget the Randall Steel Man 500, one of the best of the early solid-state designs, a bit on the heavy side with the stock JBL speaker but that's what the casters are for  |

| I see. There's a lot more amplification out there for pedal steel guitars than I thought. Now, there are "solid state" and "tube" amplifiers.... my question here is, and forgive me for asking, Is a 100 watt tube amplifier equally as loud as a 300 watts solid state amp? |

Due to the nonlinear perception of "loudness", a 300 watt amp would only sound slightly louder than a 100 watt amp of the same type....and, of course, the quality of the sound when loud is a big issue....How clean is it at that volume? Does it have that sometime solid-state honky midrange? Is the harmonic structure bland or interesting? Does it have a crisp low end response that requires high power if the amp hasn't been designed for it? etc., etc.)
But bottom line, in an admittedly extremely unscientific experiment, my tube-based Milkman Sound Pedal Steel Amp (85 watts) feels pretty much the same practical volume range as my 200 watt G-K MB200 solid state amp, both with SICA 15" speakers (although slightly different models). I suspect that a 300 watt solid state amp wouldn't change that feeling.
Of course, I only play the MB200 once every couple of months, just to remind myself how much more personality the Milkman has...or I use it if I'm playing in a field for people who won't care, so an amp/cab/spkr that weighs only 22lbs trumps sound quality...(note: I apologize for my frequent laudatory Milkman posts, but I admittedly have become a rabid groupie ever since first hearing this amp)
