C6th Pedal 5 raise on top - why ?

The standard C6th copedant has Pedal 5 raising the top string (G on top - not D). I have never come across any tab that makes use of this change. Can anyone point out how it is commonly used ?

It tops out the one fret back from open with P5+P6 diminished (a sub for the 5 chord just before going back to the 1).
Also works great for E9th on S12U.

5 pedal, 3 string 1/2 tone lower, and 4 string 1/2 tone lower gives you E-9th on the first 6 strings. It's good for the Steel Guitar Rag if you like open strings!

When the pedals were FIRST being added to C6, pedal 5 LOWERED the first string to an F#. It wasn't long before somebody (probably Buddy) began raising it to G#. I know he was doing this as far back as when he cut his "Steel Guitar Jazz" album, because one can clearly hear it on several tunes on that album.

It wasn't long after this that we all had to have the G# rather than the F#. I often felt I would like to go back to lowering the string. And when I purchased my U-12, this is precisely what I did. And I am soooo glad I did. While the G# has some advantages, the F# has much more I think. I just love it on the U-12. And frankly, I have not missed the G# (G on a U-12), at all. And apparently Buddy hasn't either, Since he doesn't even have the string now; since he went to a D on top.

If I am not mistaken, Pete Drake used the F# as the beginning note to the "Spook" that was quite popular for a while. He used both feet, with pedals 5, 6 and 7 engaged, rolling off of pedal 6 AFTER picking the 2nd string. And so on.

Later, I found a way to do this lick on the E9th neck. But it doesn't sound quite like on the C6th neck with the 1st string being lowered to an F#.

On some of the early high Gs, pedal 5 raised it up to A, which made a nice chord also.

On my 5th pedal; I lower the G to F# like you should.
I raise my G to G# on the lever that raises the A to Bb....for a true Augmented chord.....like you should.
I agree with Carl....there is much more use of the G to F# on the 5th pedal...and if you have to have G to G#; well there it should be on the lever that gives you the flat7th chord...yeeee haaaa.

I use it when I want a Dom7b5 chord with the b5 on top.I mostly use it in blues tunes w/a lot of passing chords when I want a slightly "outside" flavor.
