Hi all, I'm a new guy here from the Gold Coast Australia. Just thought I'd introduce myself and post a pic or 2 of my lap steel guitars. I am the owner of GuitarPartsAustralia.com and I make lap & Console Non Pedal Steel Guitars. Mostyn is the brand name. I also wind pickups and produce my version of the Stringmaster pickups. These are Mostone "Vintsteel" 8 string single coils. Here's a couple of my Mostyn "Sofala" series lap steels. 6 and 7 string. I also make 8 string which I will put up photos of soon. This is a great place for steelers.
This photo show a left handed one I made

Thanks guys.I'll probably get some conflicting comments regarding my comments now about nuts but here goes....When I first built a lap steel, I used a bone nut. I was real happy with the tone. However after using brass for 2nd one, I was very surprised indeed of the difference in tone. It made the tone (in my opinion) brighter. I now only use brass for nuts and on my 8 stringers use brass for both nuts and bridges. I give them a little coat of clear laxquer to prevent tarnishing. I have a great friend in Canada (long way from Australia) Bent Romnes who makes really nice pedal steels, Benrom Pedal Steel Guitars, who fabricates nuts, bridges I desigb and also lots of other metal parts. He does an excellent job. He's a great bloke |

Hi Julian,
I also use single coils as I am more into country than blues. Most of the orders I get though for 6 stringers are from players that want a humbucker installed. I have a 6 stringer here that has a humbucker that I love to play country music on and its got a nice warm tone for songs such as Rose Of San Antone etc. However, the 8 string laps and consoles all have 2 single coils I wind to about 8.7k ohms. The bridge pickup is reverse wound/reverse polarity and I wire it up similar to Stringmaster. i.e Volume,Tone and Pickup blender pot. Next one is going to be transparent green over quilted maple. I'll post a picture and hopefully sound clips when it's finished. |
