I'm looking for recommendations for albums to dig into John Hughey's playing. Let me know which Conway Twitty or other albums I should check out.

Of course, you are aware that John released several truly great CD's still available thro his website.
Not a bad tune among any of them.

"She Needs Someone To Hold Her When She Cries" and "How Much More Can She Stand, and Still Stand By Me" are my 2 favorite Twitty Albums. All the early Twitty Albums are great, even though Lew Houston played on some real early cuts.

Several Vince Gill CD's. They have John all over them.

Ronnie Milsap "20-20 Vision" has some great Hughey stuff on it.

Dickey Betts "Highway Call" (there's a thread going now about that album.

Can't leave out the first Time Jumpers CD and DVD.

Check out this list of credits for John from Allmusic.com.

Just to veer a little off topic, in that list is a Connie Smith album ("Just For What I Am" -- a 5 disc set) that has Hughey, Jimmy Crawford, Stu Basore, Hal Rugg, Dickey Overbey, Weldon Myrick all playing on it. Says it was released this year. I am going to have see about getting that one.

I'm partial to Vince Gill's "The Key".
Can't go wrong here - very solid album.

John Hughey's "On and off stage" from 1976 is perhaps the best instrumental steel album ever recorded. Listen to "I'll come runnin'", "Hello Darlin'" and "You've never been this far before" and let your jaw drop to the floor in awe. Not one mediocre track on the whole album.

Too bad that list from AllMusic.com isn't all inclusive of every song John played on. Here are a few I really like.

Marty Stuart / Travis Tritt - "This One's Gonna Hurt You" CLICK HERE

Shania Twain - "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under" - Some neat stuff from John. Not much, but real cool. CLICK HERE

Barbara Mandrell - "Standing Room Only" - One of my faves. CLICK HERE

Some may argue this fact, but I believe I am the biggest John Hughey fan alive (and not just in physical size).

“Feeling’s” (1976)

A few sides from Kitty, Ray & Cal Smith:

Kitty Wells: “Forever Young” (1974)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JuFydaNYAY

Ray Price “Like Old Times Again” (1975)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPn1JJLObCE

Cal Smith "The Lord Knows I'm Drinking" (1973)

Looking over this short list makes me I wonder if anybody ever had a year like John Hughey had in 1974?

If you have been playing a while and know your way around the steel, the thing that will strike you about John Hughey's playing is not so much what he plays but how well he plays it. I bought The Key just to pick up some new Hughey licks, but as I began to play it, time and again, I thought "Well, I know that one, but it just sounds like a different lick when he plays it". Breaking the lick down, I find I'm playing it in the same place, but he just has that "attitude". This is true with a lot of the greats.

+1 for "On and Off Stage!" I abdo-lutely hated that song "I'm Not Lisa." but when I heard John play it, his version became a favorite of mine. Just had to learn it!

Dylan,
I like gospel music so I recommend John's gospel CD
"He Touched Me."
Also, John played on several of the songs in George Jones' two CD set "The Gospel Collection."
