Good morning everyone. I haven't posted in a long time. Having some problems and lost interest for quite a while. My question is, since I have no knowledge of theory, scales or much of anything else. Would the Jeff Newman course Up From the Top be a good starting place for me to get the basics. I have a Sierra 10/12 gearless and I think I have it set up to standard E9 copedent. I am learning the mechanics as I go along. All opinions would be greatly appreciated. Jr. Watts

Up from the top series is a must have for newbies. That has been the main tools for learning these past 2 years.There is the A&B pedals, The D lever, F lever and etc. I would have been much farther behind without these.  |

| "Up From The Top" IMO is perhaps the best instruction for beginning pedal steelers. It teaches you the basics of the A&B pedals and the D&F levers and how to navigate between the pockets. I'm not a very good steeler but it got me up and running in a relatively short amount of time. No scales or theory in this course. |

Thank you to Ray and Alan for your replies. I will get the course ordered Monday. I wish I had started learning PSG when I was a young man and still had a good memory. Harder to learn now. Thanks again.

| Hey Jr., might I also suggest getting the E9th Chord Dictionary? The book is helpful, but I'd get the video too, helps to make more sense of the book. Good luck on your journey! |

Another vote for starting PSG at 55 years old, and choosing the Jeff Newman videos! I'm lucky to have already learned a ton of theory and ear training, but this poor old body can't always respond physically to what the brain wants it to do.
Like my 6-string playing, I'll have to be satisfied with the choice of notes, and not the mind-blowing speed or technique. Just like old "Slow-Hand" !

Thumbs up for that Jeffran college course, Jeff doesnt teach for the sake of theory, in fact he states theory as a tool for future expert players, He doesnt want his students getting ahead of themselves and burning out, He wants to get everyone playing that guitar the right way very quickly,

| I've purchased a few of the Newman courses, and PSG techniques, and the Up from the Top series have been most beneficial. I am feeling more comfortable than ever with navigating the fretboard as a result of this series. I'm planning on going through them again! |

Thanks to all of you for responding on the up from the top course. After talking to Fran this morning, I opted to order the Right Hand Alpha course first as my right hand is TERRIBLE. When I finish it I will order the up from the top course. If I ordered them at the same time I know that I would skip back and forth to much. I need to break some bad habits that I have developed. I have made up my mind that if I am going to put in the time to realize my dream of playing the PSG I am going to try to do it right. There are a couple of songs that I would like to be able to play at church to honor my mother and dad and would like to do it in a way that would bring tears to the eyes of the congregation. If I can do that I can do anything. Just my dream I guess.

Jr, Thats great that you want to do that, Be patient and ask for Gods speed and he` will give you the power, Thats about the best reason I`ve heard to learn your psg.
