Mooney with Waylon--don't get no better---Pictures added

Post by James Morehead »

Got a favorite Waylon / Mooney tune? I'll start it off with "It's Not Supposed To Be That Way". Enjoy.

It's a hard sell between "Old Five and Dimers" or "Let's Turn Back the Years". Although this is a Waylon/Mooney thread, and the Moon shines on all, I have to mention I am also liking his early work with Janet McBride, who was kind enough to send me a whole mess of Mooney this week. Stuff he did early on with his homemade steel, recording with Wynn's band backing the fine Janet McBride around '59 and '60

Richard, I think that is my favorite example of single string playing ever, and he just rocks that whole recording through.

Yes it is, Craig. PM me if you are interested in hearing some of Janet's early honky tonk stuff. West Coast sessions with Moon and there is some stuff from a couple Nashville sessions which Lloyd Green arranged and played on. Really good stuff! .

That's our second song on our set list. Love to sink my teeth into that song.

Richard, do you get to play a little Waylon music down in your area?

Yeah, Todd, great links.

I love Moon's early stuff, instantly recognizable. An original MF. But man, whne he went with Wynn things started happening there, and then with Merle and Burton gave us a sharper vision of things to come, then about laid everything out with Waylon. His stuff with Waylon is so good you just sit there and laugh, the amount of imagination, soul and personality that come through.

probably been played to death around here....

Daniel, love that tune. Here's another on our set list. A 1974 piece of gold not commonly heard.

Yeah, that's a good one James. I really like listening to that one driving around, and the phased guitar is nice and rich sounding, so cool the way it comes in and out. Mooney sounds like he's opening up the sky.

Here's another good one. I just saw them run this episode on RFD and it reminded me of seeing it on youtube.

You can get a couple little shots of Mooney using both feet.

Someday, James, I am going to find an old beat to hell Sho-Bud Pro I or LDG and take it right on over to your place and let a little magic get shined and dressed into it. Your work looks like true "labor of love " and the steels get to be 110% of what they once were.

I'd be more than happy to help out, Danny.
