HELP! How do you read TAB?

Post by Abe Stoklasa »

Hey guys. I have my girst steel lesson Oct. 3, and I need to know how to read tab. I read the Number system and read sheet music, but I've never tried to learn this. Could someone show/tell me how? Any info would be appreciated! Thanks Image

The lines, from the bottom up, represent the strings on the guitar from lowest to highest in pitch. The numbers represent fret numbers.

One explanation
Here is another
The examples are for standard Spanish guitar, but the principle is the same for lap or pedal steel. Jeff's explanation pretty much sums it up. That should get you started.
