Topic: Video featuring my new double 8 |

I finally found some time to do a little video with my recently completed double 8. This is sort of a medley, or two somewhat similar tunes back to back.
The first song is "Louisiana Fairy Tale", an old tune recorded by Fats Waller sometime in the thirties. You may also recognize it as the original theme song for "This Old House" a few years back. The second song is "If I Had You", which starts out with a very similar chord progression. I thought the two songs would be nice together.
I didn't have much time to spend on this one, and video is a pretty unforgiving medium. If it were only audio, I probably would have cleaned up some sloppy playing, but I've been building instead of practicing, so it is what it is... Choose HD viewing for the best experience.

ah-ha, so you are steeljazz....i've loved your youtube channel for a while. never knew who it was. you must have a huge stash of stuff, it seems every video is a different configuration of steels/guitars.
not only great playing/arranging, but the video quality is pro-level - you must have some aux lights - the lighting on the steel is perfect. whats the set up?

Jerome, regarding the video setup, you'd laugh if you saw the way I do it- I just hang a black sheet of muslin to conceal all the clutter behind me in my cramped little music room, and turn a lamp toward me. I pay much more attention to the audio recording, and I'm pretty indifferent about the video. I just keep a camera rolling while recording the sequences, try to get a few different angles, and sync it all up with the mixed audio track later.
Mike- How do you know if I was wearing pants at all?
Obviously, I pay little attention my attire, other than making sure I'm always wearing the correct wrinkled shirt for each instrument... |

JERRY: Enjoyed your clip immensely! How 'bout some more of that great playing?
I'd love to hear how your guitar sounds with a stainless steel bar. It sounds great, as it is, however I think such a comparison might be educational. My ears heard something like when my music teacher recommended 'a plastic bar'.....sort of a muting affect?
As said above, the camera work is absolutely fantabulous!!!! I'm sure we're all envious.
After years here on the SGF, I can't pass up this opportunity to compliment you on your accurate bar work. I noticed that you weren't observed just sliding into a general area on the neck to be followed by rapid shaking and/or rolling of the bar in order to get the musical tones 'IN TUNE' by finding the correct fret position.
What's the rest of the story? What amp or just thro' your board? Did you use regular cables out of the guitar or right angle plugs? THANKS for sharing! |

Thanks again, everyone! Ray, the Tribo-Tone bar doesn't sound much different than a stainless or chrome bar, its just less noisy and easier to hold on to. This guitar is most certainly capable of a much brighter tone, but I had sort of a "vintage" sound in mind for this video. Maybe I missed the mark, and should have brightened the tone a bit.
The steel was recorded direct, through my Tonic tube preamp. No need for a right angle plug, as the jack is on the bottom side of the guitar.
