The little bar tick was 'cute'. Now, if only you could have spun the bar up and down the neck like we've heard about one of the 'icons' having done.

great Classic non-pedal Tone and Technique. I really enjoyed listening. Bye-Bye Blues was one of the first Dance Band Songs I learned back in the early forties.

Thank you, gentlemen! I'm glad you like it. I've always liked this tune. Especially Les Pauls' version. I think Chet Atkins recorded it too. It's a fun song to play.

For that bar trick, I hold the bar upright and vibrate the back edge of the bar very rapidly on a wound string to create the effect, and stomp down on the volume pedal.

I love the hammer-ons.
I think I have to learn this tune.
Gonna take a while to get it anywhere near that good, though.
Is that BIAB track available, or do I just have to figure it out myself?

Great playing! Loved it! Butt,,,, it reminds me of my youth, and something that will strike fear and loathing into the hearts of most Forum members,,, specially b0b! When I was 13/14, I played banjo! Tenor, Plectrum and 5-string. I was the youngest member of The Cleveland Society For The Preservation of Frustrated Banjo Plunkers. There were 50 or 60 members,,, all old guys of 60, 70 or 80 years, who were retired players from America's Jazz Age. Not a leaker amongst them! All fabulous players! Once a year, we'd have a big meet up. We rented a barge, converted to a restaurant, and sailed out onto Lake Erie. I'm pretty sure the City government forced us to do this, so as to be out of earshot of the local residents.

The abdo-lute highlight of the evening was everyone playing "Bye, Bye Blues." An ensemble of 50/60 guys. And the "highlight" of the "Highlight" was the half time tremolo chorus! Awesome! Wish I had a recording of it! Would be great for pest control, or driving the local teenagers off my lawn!

I make fun of this right now, but I met some really wonderful, extremely talented old guys, from a Bye-Gone Era in American Music!
"Bye, Bye, Blues",,,, indeed!

I thought I'd seen everything but that upright bar trick was a new one on me. The whole cut is so cool! Les Paul would be grinning from ear to ear.

John, I'm glad you like the song, and I'm glad it brings back memories of a bygone era! I've always thought of this tune as an old time 'jam' song, with soloists blasting out improv a la Tin Pan Alley, swing, jazz... etc. Kind of a novelty song. A bit like "Listen to the Mockingbird" for the fiddle players. The late Doc Watson and David Grisman have a good live version of Bye Bye Blues on youtube. Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Les Paul, Merle Travis, Oscar Peterson, and many others have recorded it.

The b@njo players?... I seem to remember watching the Mummers strumming this tune and marching in the St. Patrick's Day Parade! I can see it now... 100 banjo players wearing feathers and makeup, strumming Bye, Bye Blues! ...on second thought, maybe I should delete this song from my youtube channel.
