Okay guys, I'm now home from the hospital after 48 hours there. I want to thank each and every one of y'all for the good wishes and thoughts and prayers for my recovery. Your well-wishes and response to my predicament, the phone calls, emails, and more brought tears to my eyes and in fact, I'm welling up as I type this.

The bad news is that I got into a 3-car pileup in my Datsun sports car and things actually could have been a lot worse... I could have been killed, except for my seat belt. My nose hit the steering wheel and got fractured, but the real damage was to my right foot. I sustained a Lisfrank fracture on all my metatarsal bones, basically a dislocation of my entire mid-foot.

The prognosis is that I must not put any weight whatsoever on my foot for two months, and I'm having to learn how to handle a walker and build up strength in my arms which now must frequently support my whole body weight. Getting on and off the toilet is a major logistical maneuver that one takes for granted until that ability goes away.

After two months, I'll be in a surgical boot for another two months, still using the walker, at which point the pins and screws will be removed from the bones. The entire recovery will be between 6 months and a year, if I ever fully recover (that is, pain free).

But I am determined to beat this thing and get back to my life's mission as soon as I feasibly can.

My wife is of course the true heroine of this whole matter as she's patiently taking care of her depressed and impatient husband. I've been getting great morale support from my good pals here in town, especially Tony Harrison, who promised me my job back as soon as I'm able, no matter how long it takes; Rose Sinclair, a dear sweetheart who gave me such morale uplift the first night in the hospital; and Danny Hawk, my closest friend and fellow steel player for almost 40 years.
My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg?

Herb, I'm just checking in here to find this news... I certainly join the others in wishing you a complete recovery. In the mean time, open the volume pedal and just let 'er ride.

Best wishes!
