sounds pretty american to me

We call em' "French Fries",don't know why,maybe that's how they do it in France:Potatos cut lengthwise & deep fried="French Fries".
So the saying"want fries with that",originated with fast food restaurants here in America,when you order a hamburger the waiter will ask"You want fries with that?.Hence my vocabulary of "French"!!! |

the french call them "pommes frits" which means "potatoes fried"
