Cajun steel guitar music

Post by Cliff Kane »

The post in the pedal steel section on Cajun tunings has me interested in hearing some of this music. I have a very cursory familiarity with Cajun music, and I haven't heard any of it with steel guitar. What are some albums to listen to, and where may one find them? Any sources for a good intro to Cajun steel?

Thanks!
Cliff

Well its more jazz/country cajun in the style developed by Harry Choates, but Frenchie Burke's recordings have some fabulous steel playing, some of his LP's which aren't hard at all to find have the fabulous steel playing of Robbie Springfield. Many of his later LP's have Jim Loessberg and others I think. Robbie's steel playing on Big Bamou, Frenchie's Signature song, is exceptional.

Frenchie is a master showman with a fabulous personality. He still plays quite a bit if you ever get a chance to hear him, don't miss the experience. He has been playing memorial day sunday at Pearls in Fort Worth or the last four years with the great fiddler Reggie Rueffer who plays for Charlie Pride. Don't miss this show if he plays next year if you can make it, its the experience of a lifetime.

Harry Choates Bear family recording has some good steel playing if I remember right, it may be lap steel I am not sure.

There is a thread on this forum about Cajun Steel. Featuring Jr. Martin, Murnel Babineaoux, Richard Comeoux, and several other Cajun players. The tunings are discussed and there are some great Utube videos of these guys playing. Check under Pedal Steel - Cajun Steel G tuning. Jody.

I have been studying cajun steel since last April ... recordings by Aldus Roger,Joe Bonsal, Junior Martin (some cool stuff on the Martin Family CD available through Juniors website http://martinaccordions.com/, Nathan Abshire with the Balfa Brothers, Belton Richard, Austin Pitre and Jel Sonnier have been real helpful. (also some great clips of Aldus ROger Band on youtube) I use amazing slowdowner to slow it all down and so I can hear what the steel player is up to .. also great for playing along with at the slow speed to get your chops.
