This large a turnout was quite unexpected. We've had at most 21 players in the past, and that was a lot, though it turned out to be manageable and everyone seemed happy. Usually attendance has been 15-18. This time we've got so many that we're going to have to be creative to allow everybody to get a chance to play. So, to be fair to all, we'll be keeping the number in the players' circle at any one time to about 12-15, as well as asking each player to hold to 3 hours (about a gig's worth). (We'll have exceptions for heavy hitters, of course.)

For you math nuts, it figures like this:

Circle time per player = (Tot. jam hours) X (No. players in circle) / (Tot. no. of players)

That would give (8 hrs.) X (13 in circle) / (35 players) = 3 hrs.

That assumes the number of total players stays the same (I think I'll need to cap it at 35), and that we start at exactly 10am and finish at 6pm.

I sure didn't expect the jam to get this big. It just snowballed. But as they say, it's a "good problem" to have.

Just remember, any time spent not playing is time spent listening and schmoozing!

Bill,
Instead of time shifts, we could set up in the circle, and when a new tune is started, every 3rd player gets a ride (except for the star players like David Wright and myself

who get to pick all day). If he doesn't want/know the tune, he can pass it to the person to his right.
Or something like that.

Because of the jump in population of additional quality players for this event, I'm going to try and come again this year, but as an observer only-and I'd be more than willing to help folks hump some equipment up those steps.

That way there is no pressure on me to play on anything more complex than "Your Cheatin' Heart"

...and I can learn by observing.

My wife's mother is about a mile away from the jam location (we grew up there in the Almaden Valley - go Leland Chargers, blue & gold!) so I can drive down with my wife and drop her off.

I'll probably bring my Clinesmith dobro again this year for those that would like to check out what a state-of-the-art modern resonator guitar is all about, especially if you don't own a nice dobro yourself. Todd Clinesmith put a new ebonex bridge cap on my dobro, and sounds even better than it did before.

It doesn't appear that Todd himself is coming down this year with Pat Ickes (Todd is getting ready to move from Humboldt County to Roseburg, Oregon).

I'll be looking forward to checking out David's SuperSlide, I have been wanting to get one for awhile now.

Just so you know in dealing with the logistics of all this --
My gig for that day is confirmed, but not until early evening.
So I plan on attending for a couple of hours maybe late morning, early afternoon, as an observer only, just for the comraderie. No need to reserve a space to set up the steel.

As max occupancy goes, between the two rooms I think we could handle 60-80. I'll check. (If we get to that, somebody take a picture!!) But then there is also balcony space (outside the room doors) for expansion.

People usually use that as a schmoozing zone anyway.

I'm just so shocked by the response to this jam. This event may become an annual institution, despite its insipid host (yes, that's me). I'm thrilled.

I had a thought... Since there will be so many players, if we'd want to throw together a bass/drums/guitar back-up band instead of the BIAB, I'd be glad to volenteer to play guitar or bass instead of bringing my steel and dobro.

Well, the rains are here and the creek will rise. I have 500 more feet of trench to dig. I knew this would happen!

I was hoping to drown out those ZBs with my Fender 400, but it's not to be. Thanks Bill for the invite and I hope to make it next time. Spring is best for me.
