Right about now I'm really confused with what strings to order for a new eight string lap steel. The more I look around the internet, the more I'm confused. I'll be starting off with high G, C6 tuning. I've only found one set that states it's for high G, C6 and they are Nickel and from GeorgeBoards. But, are these what I want? I see Stainless, Nickel, semi flat wounds and different combinations of mixed material. I know string gauge is important for different tuning's. I'm really not sure what high G, C6 calls for. I'd like to get the strings ordered. No one around here sells eight string sets for lap steel.

Doug,

You might have to get a 6 string set and 2 single strings ? Try these for 2 thru 6

Then get a single .011 or .012 for the high G and

Then get a single for the 8th ... a .042 to .054 depending on what note you'll tune to:

I prefer nickel myself, vs stainless, but try them both and you decide.

OR, here is a 'high C6' stainless set:

Good luck !

I use the Herb Remington C6 set mentioned above for sale in the forum store- it is just fine. And they come really quickly. And it helps the forum!

I personally like a really stiff high G, so I bump that string up a couple of thousandths, but it would be fine with just the standard set....

I like THIS SET, which is actually intended for E13, but you can use it for High G, C6th, plus it gives you a .012 for your high G.

THIS SET is intended for High G, C6th, and with it your high G would be a .011

Could I go with the pure nickel E13th set and change the .036 and .042 to .038 and .046? Would this be ok for High G, C6 without hurting anything?

You're only talking about a .002 to .004 difference, but depending on what pitch you're going to tune to, I'd check b0b's string gauge chart to be sure. It's intended for Pedal Steel, but that makes no differences for our purposes. Here the link:

I know your talkin 8 string... I went through the same cornfusion with 6 strings..after hits and misses of strings that just didnt ring. Heres my choice, even though I have to buy 'singles'
I have this one tuned to D
Ernie Ball's
16 18 28 38 48 58

I know D is kind of an unusual tuning here. I play with different people in a few styles..from country-twang to being hired to do a few shows with an R&B/Soul band. I tried different tunings for all but it was chaos. Its taken a couple years to learn the spots I can get that (almost)Herb Remington feel and still do a Rock or Blues job. Mr. Green
