The little icon on the task bar that shows you what is installed and lets you remove safely an external drive has disappeared .. any idea where to find my lost icon?

This is on Windows 7, but it might be the same on other versions. Right click on the taskbar and select Properties. In the taskbar tab, click on Customize. That will let you set the behavior of each of the icons. You may have mistakenly set it to "Hide icon and notifications".

Tried that, it wasn't even on the list of icons that are past items..

I also noticed something strange.. in my computer, when any drive is highlighted , EJECT THIS DISK
shows up.. but not for drive K (my external hard drive ).

Also a "Q" drive is now in there.. it is both full and empty with zero amount of files..

all my other drives are there C, my internal , plus a multi card reader G-H-I- J, and D-E-G are cd & dvd drives.

I did a soft re boot.. with no changes..

I am running Windows XP

I did a quick Google search for "windows remove hardware icon missing" and got about 843,000 results. Most of them seem to have about the same suggestions. Have you tried any of them?

I did the same google search.. cnet had the best solution..
I opened device manager from systems info..
looked at the current live drives.. everything was A-OK

Then I used this from the C prompt
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

It opens a removal wizard.. while it was open, I inserted a flash drive, identified which drive it was since there is no letter to id it.
Then asked it to stop it and safely remove.
The SR icon briefly appeared and then re appeared in the tool bar..

The word is that XP does require you to use the SR icon.. but it still issues the warning if you don't.
I prefer to use it as a safe practice.

I had the same problem with Windows XP, shortly before I ditched it for Windows 7. I used the same path as you did, but pasted it into a new "Shortcut" on my desktop, which I labeled "Safely Remove Hardware." Double clicking this icon launches the Safely Remove box.
