Zum S12,,, 4 pedals 5 knees,,,SOLD pending payment

Post by Billy Henderson »

I AM LOWERING THE PRICE TO $2400 FOR QUICK SALE

This steel, Zum S12 ext E9, 4 pedals 5 knees, is just back last week from Bruce Zumsteg,,,he checked it all out including changer. It plays like a new one. Emmons setup. According to Bruce it is a 1987 model. It is in very good condition, has a Trutone pickup and sounds like a Zum...Case shows some use but very functional...

Zum 12-string

With all the grass and worms on the strings and in the changer, it just depreciated by about $600. I'll give you 2K. ;~)

Seriously, it's a great guitar. Here's why I know:

Thanks John but it is laying on holy ground,,,no worms here if there were they would be fried in this heat,,,Did I see you playing yours on a you tube video? It sure looked like you and the guitar sounded awesome!

I forgot to mention this one can be a S12 U if someone wants to put it back. I have a couple of new pedals I would throw in.

How much is needed to move it to some type of universal tuning? I have yet to mess with one but am attracted to the idea; though I'd hate to haq up the creaters fresh set-up...

Any more pics?

how many extra pedals/rods and such are you willing to toss in?

thanx! purty

Switching to Universal

Post by John Russell »

You'll need to get the parts from Bruce Zumsteg or any shop that services pedal steel guitars. It's doable, the cost may make you decide to look for a universal guitar. Zumsteel universals aren't all that common so it's a decision you'll have to make. I've been playing my Zum universal for some 18 years and it's been a wonderful axe. I just bought a Sierra uni and sold a GFI uni so they're out there. The best bargains will be MSA universals; they're plentiful and I'd suggest you try one to see if going 12-string uni is for you. MSAs are great guitars; they may need a few tweaks. Many players try universal and go back to their D-10s. I won't go into the pros and cons--that's been covered here in detail. For me it was a good move, solved lots of issues and I appreciate the lighter weight more and more.

Billy, is this Zum standard height? And is the color a solid black or some kind of "smokey" black? I may just be seeing some reflections in the guitar finish on the photo of the top of the guitar.

Thanks for the input John. I have an MSA d-10 now and it's weight is perhaps the main factor in 'upgrading'. I imagine an older universal would have the same problem. Freakin twin reverb is heavy enough. Food for thought though.

To the original poster: Does this have the 'hybrid' changer? Don't know much about Zum's other than the fact that people seem to rave about em.

Thanks

Matt, Bruce does not offer the Hybrid option on S12's, only the D10/SD10 guitars!
14'Zumsteel Hybrid D10 9+9
08'Zumsteel Hybrid D10 9+9
94' Franklin Stereo D10 9+8
Telonics, Peterson, Steelers Choice, Benado, Lexicon, Red Dirt Cases.

It is standard height. The color, according to the mica color chart on the Zum site, looks like the "blackstone".

I probably should have passed on the new ZUM I would have been content to play this one for a long long time...

12-string hybrid

Post by John Russell »

I didn't know Bruce didn't make the hybrid option for 12s. I can't imagine a better sounding guitar than my 1990 SD-12 Zum. Surely it's possible but my ears aren't
that tuned to hear the difference that people discuss here. I guess Bruce wouldn't have gone to the trouble to design the hybrid device if it really didn't matter.

So many great players play all sorts of guitars. Of course great instruments inspire players to excel but other things do to. The whole rig is very important and the reverb/delay device is key. Great players are also great listeners.
