Sorry for the repost/movement on this one - I didn't get any bites in "Steel on the Web," so I moved this thread here to Pedal Steel" this a.m. (and deleted the other one), since this is a technique question.
The specific lick I'm wondering about is in the song seen here (Go straight to 0:54 if you wish): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgylOni0JSI
He plays the intro in the beginning, of course, and again at 0:54 - the one at 0:54 is what's got me confused. The key in the vid is C#. I thought I had learned it correctly by playing on strings 1 and 2 first on fret 5, and then again on fret 4 (with the second string lowered), and then strings 4 and 5 (AB down) going from fret 4, to 3, and then to 2, and finally to strings 5 and 6 (AB). However, when you watch his hand at :054, he is clearly not playing the lick this way - the first several moves keep him in the same fret position. I can't figure it out - any help here?
Thanks in advance.
My other question is whether this is Hal Rugg or Pete Drake or neither. _________________ Click here for the Index to Mickey Adams's YouTube video lessons

That is Hal - if you stop the video at his ride he is on Fret 2 - then up to 4 - down to 2 and back to 4 .
maybe this will help -- Hals work has always been over my head -- he was the most inovative picker ther ever was . may he RIP |

John the steel player is Hal Rugg on the Wilburn Brothers' show from the late 60's or early 70's. To my knowledge the only steel players that I know of that were on the Wilburn Brothers were Hal, Don Helms, and Curly Chaulker. _________________ 2006 Zum D10 8x8,1969 ZB Custom D10,

The repeated notes in the first bar (0:55) are B and G# played at fret 2.
B played on 3rd string raised to A
G# played on 4th string raised to F#.
The notes in the next bar are A# and F# played on the same strings and the same fret 2 but the pedals are released so the open strings are G# and E.
And you're right; there are a lot of other ways to play those notes. |

i was trying to figure this out yesterday and i found this post. the answer is better late than never. the video is deceptive, because to me it looks like he's on the third fret.

Jon, use the YouTube speed control and slow the video down to .5 to make deciphering easier. |
