Not so much a mystery as a curiosity.

Shot Jackson built Jerry Byrd a very special Sho-Bud, without pedals, like no other Sho-Bud before or since. It was curly maple and all the fittings were gold plated. Here's a photo of it taken from Jerry Byrd's Biography "It Was a Trip on Wings of Music."

Notice that on the upper picture there's a nameplate which seems to read Jerry. On the other picture there's a different nameplate in the same place which seems to read Sho-Bud.

Is there a story here ? Did he swap them around, or which one came first ?

Also, whatever happened to that guitar after Jerry passed on ?

According to the Jerry Byrds Fan Club website the guitar that says Sho-Bud on it was gifted to "Scotty" Scott Dewitt in St. Louis along with other items such as amps etc. I guess one neck was set up for a seven string tuning and the other set up for eight strings.

Obviously there's an age difference in the two shots, so the SB logo was there prior to the change, and done by Shot... if I remember correctly.

JB's Sho-Bud also appears to have had three different fretboards in it's lifetime. The first(?) being the Sho-Bud dark field suit of cards fretboard, then the white field suit of cards fretboard you see in his instruction course, and lastly the silver field "JB" fretboard used on the Sho-Bud frypans and Excels.

Crowbear,What about it!? tell us about the Sho-bud in your picture please? This seems to be a different color than the videos on youtube of Jerry playing on "Sand" and "Beautiful Kahana." Was this one of Jerry's guitars?

Jerry's only SB console was an 8/7, with the 7 on the outer neck, if I remember correctly.

Alan!
Those pics bring back some delightful memories! I was staying at the Beachcomber Hotel with my family in '74. Wandered down to the lounge on a Tuesday night, and there was Jerry's trio! He was playing that guitar, I believe. The audience was two, me,,, and a very beautiful hooker on her night off. Sat and talked with Jerry on every break, as I was too broke to talk to the gal.

Look for an email from me, with some other tidbits.

Well,The mystery is over,That JB Sho Bud belongs to me.Shot Jackson built this guitar for me 31 years ago.I made a number of changes to this guitar for the better. I removed the single coil pickups and installed George L"s,Rickenbacher bridges, stainless steel nuts and converted it to 7 strings 3/8 spacing and Excel fret boards. The tuning key head i made out of black cherry.By the way,We play better upside down

Well, that accounts for the one that Crowbear posted, and if Jerry Byrd's instrument was given to Scotty, which I'm sure Jerry would have wanted, unless another pedal-less Sho-Bud turns up that probably accounts for all of them.

We still don't know why the nameplate was changed on Jerry's, but, as Ron Whitfield pointed out, the two photos of Jerry were taken some time apart. Notice the difference in the hairline.

At the time Shot Jackson built my JB steel there was one being built ahead of me for Lorene Ruymar who lives in Canada.

I heard there were four made. I had a chance to buy the 4th quite a few years back. If my memeory is correct the one I had a chance to buy was Walnut, built for Nick Maniscalco, the guitar sold after I declined.

There is a clip on YouTube of Bobby Seymour playing a Sho~Bud non pedal guitar.
He even advertised for a while that he had all the parts and would build you a non pedal Sho~Bud guitar.
I sent him a deposit for one and then I guess he decided it wasn't such a good idea and he returned my deposit. Maybe the Jacksons decided it wasn't the thing to do.(or maybe it was Gretsch) Whoa!

i bet after the Sho-Bud Fry Pan episode, Jerry covered the Sho-Bud logo with his name - simple explanation but i bet in the ballpark.

I know for a fact that Jerry ordered a spare Sho Bud, w/o the Gold and special p/u's after he moved to Honolulu and in the early to mid 70's, because; I was in the Sho Bud shop on Broadway when it was ready to be shipped. The only hold-up was that no one knew what strings to put on it, so; being familiar with Jerry's tunings, I was given the task by Shot to string it up for shipment!

This guitar also had Sho Bud fretboards, if I remember correctly. It's also possible that Jerry ordered it for a student! I wish I'd have been able to afford to order one also! I'd still have it. _ _ _ Jerome; You're in the right park!

To quote Artie Johnson; very interesting...
Awesome info, John, thanx!

One particular time Jerry played Waikiki's Royal Hawaiian Hotel, he set his case with his Sho-Bud in it against the front wall as he waited for his ride after the gig and spent the time talking to the doorman, only to leave his guitar behind and forgetting about it until the next morning when he went down to bring it back up to his apt. Realizing his drastic error he figured "well, that's gone". But he drove to the hotel anyway with ebbing hope, to find the same doorman there, waiting with Jerry's guitar. Good things happen to good people, thanx to a good doorman.

Howdy all -

I'm not a steel player so forgive my ignorance, but I believe I may have recently uncovered Jerry Byrd's spare '70s Sho-Bud console steel as discussed in this thread: serial number JB2.

Cheers,
Adam

Thanks so much, MLA. Very interesting. Any idea as to the number of official 7/8 console Jerry Byrd models produced by Sho-Bud? Judging by the previous posts in this thread it would seem that between Jerry and his students you could count the number on one hand. I'd be very curious to learn the serial numbers of those others.

Would a Sho-Bud without pedals sound much different than a regular Sho-Bud with the rods not connected, or a regular Sho-Bud where you kept your feet off the pedals ?

Just asking, because I rarely use the pedals on the C6 neck of my Sho-Buds.
