Well, the title may be a reach as they've only had one lesson, but two students to whom I'm teaching English, were curious about my steel guitar and wanted to try it. They really were mesmerized, and after 45 minutes we revisited the English lesson. Perhaps that was there plan all along! Nana, in the first photos is from Inner Mongolia and Liu Jie (Jenny) is from Jiangxi Province. Thanks, stevet

LIU JIE deicded to wear a red "chi pao" to match the color of the pedal steel.

Great pics Steve. The Chinese seem so interested in learning English. And now maybe you can teach them to play the steel as well.
Keep up the good work!

Steve,
I seem to remember a traditional Chinese stringed instrument that is played flat like a steel. I gave away my encyclopedia of musical instruments so I can't look it up. Anyone else remember one like that?

Heh guys, I'm doing my best to spread the gospel of steel guitar and as well as teach our language. Cut me some slack! It require great concentration. Sonny, I'm teaching them English. Frank, remember, I'm retired and this is merely a hobby, so I do this for the love, not for money; love of the steel guitar and English, that is.

As Bent says, the Chinese have been going wild studying English. They even take classes outside of regular school to do so.
Glen, I think the instrument you mean is the guzheng.
Here are a few clips:

Chris, I think there may be a place for you to teach English and steel in a country of 1.4 + billion
John, you and some of the other members are always welcome to head on over here. Kline players get preference. Nick Reed; sorry buddy!!! Be great to show you guyrs around and have you perform as I have a couple of steels you could use. But as Joe hinted at, it could be dangerous in some ways! By the way, Joe, I played some cuts from your "All Hat No Cattle" CD for these women and one asked why I didn't sound like you. I said I did not want to show off but that was a real ego deflater! I'm hiding your CDs next lesson.
Joe, in an attempt to have the ladies tone it down a bit, here is something in black, somber, funeral type wear. Hope it helps: We don't want to have any train wrecks on The Forum.

Steve, they look just as great in black. No doubt - there is a certain beauty to Chinese women. I have had the pleasure of talking with a few on Skype. I can say that they all are so polite, honest and pleasant in every way. All they want to do is learn to speak and write English. They want me to correct their spelling and speaking mistakes.
Your gently weaving of the steel guitar into this can do nothing but good. How many pedal steels are therein China? My guess is ONE - yours.

Keep up your good work Steve and continued good luck in your endeavor!

Just out of curiosity, are you teaching these women American music, or are you and they applying the steel to Chinese music.

In reading over the general tone* of these comments, i am struck by how backwards and seemingly unambitious all of the manufacturers and marketers of pedal steel guitars really are - these are clearly starvation conditions here, sirs. If any one of the dozen or so makers who's products are basically indistinguishable from another in appearance were to start draping bikini-clad super-hotties all over their steels - pretty soon, you'd HAVE to do all your steel-related surfing at work! Woo-Hoo!

Let's face it, compared to an automobile, a Stratocaster, even an ice-cream scoop, a steel guitar is pretty darn... utilitarian, in appearance. But if even one brave manufacturer were to stand firm against the blowback from the one-half of one percent of their female customers, pretty soon they'd ALL jump aboard! Woo-Hoo! One can easily envision a steel guitar show crowning "Miss Push-Pull 2012"...

*(tone is in the FINGERS... do you see how easy this is?)

Mike,

"I suck at banjo. I mean I really really suck at it. Really. "

Really handy for the coming zombies though!

Looks like a plectrum banjo. 5-string might not work as well.

And that's why we get fat and hide behind our guitars - so we don't go ruining them gals the way singers and lead guitarists do. Rolling Eyes

Well, Nick, that's a pretty big plus; I am impressed, and I'm wavering in the direction of offering you a chance to visit. Heh, wait a minute, how do I know that's you wielding those chopsticks??? Can I take you on your word, Buddy? Put an Emmons Push -Pull in that photo and that will seal the deal. Can I take you on your word, Buddy? Smile Smile
