What's the tuning on the front neck with all the bass strings?

Here's another one, years later, from Buddy's last guest appearance on the LW Show:

I think the front neck may be tuned to E7. I had a quad Stringmaster years ago and the nut on the front neck had extra wide grooves to accommodate thick strings.

Here's another clip of young Buddy M. playing his "steel kut-tar" on Welk's show ---> Click

This clip makes me wonder why he ever "upgraded" to pedal steel guitar. Oh well, that's progress. :\ 8)

Maybe he didn't consider it an upgrade?

Yes, amazing control. So cool how LW leans in and (probably) tells the kid, "Now remember to smile for da peeple!"
