listen again

Post by Bill Mayville »

Have a listen.
What the heck is happening to some of you.

It's good to see newbies trying to record something of value to them.
But Gary,come on.
I sure hope you don't play like that.Ears move by themselves trying to listen, when chord after chord is being played, and NO BLOCKING.
That is exactly why blocking is so important.
Instead of mentioning to the gentleman that he also needs to work on some kind of blocking, you put him in the spotlight.Give him a chance to learn or at least, help him also.

and taken from your profile
Helping anyone that could play,to play.
Bill your first comment is hypocritical of what you've preached on your profile page? How 'bout a little positive reinforcement or mentioning something that you feel is done correctly? Did you notice his right hand vibrato? Its certainly much better than mine. And how about his timing, much better than average? And did you see his eyes, glued to his left hand. Buddy Charleton use to cover my right hand with a magazine. It took a while to break a bad habit of paying more attention to my picking hand. He insisted one's eyes need to be glued to your bar hand.

Well, I think he did a fine job playing that tune. I would also surmise, that, he wanted the overtones to smooth out the ballad, as he accomplished.
I didn't see him watching his picking hand. I thought he was watching his bar hand, which, was pretty accurate. I don't think any kind of staccato blocking, palm or pick, was needed in that tune.
Very smooth and tastefully done.

Jeff is a good friend of mine and he has talent that many do not have. It seems that at times some of the forumites rather than offer praise want to ridicule and often times those that are ridiculing need help themselves and use the venting method to vent their own frustrations. Jeff sent me this video before it was ever posted on U-Tube and I told him at the time and telling those that care now that he is a fine pedal steel player and needs the recognition that he deserves. If I know Jeff, what you watched hime looking at was more nerves operating than watching his bar or picking hand. Jeff knows where his bar and hands are without looking.

Analog vs. Digital

Post by Leon Brannan »

We Play an amazing instrument! Many love the original analog sound the Steel Guitar created, while others like the digital sound with every note blocked. If you're playing Uncle Pen, blocking is absolutely necessary. However if you're playing How Great Thou Art, I prefer to let the notes ring. That's why I play the worlds most beautiful sounding instrument.

Jeff has good tone and plays the song with feeling. He has good timing as well An enjoyable and well played tune.
I think that Bill Mayville is totally out in left field in his critique of this picker.

Protect your friends,is a way to get around the ,infact point.
I like the way he plays.
I like his tone.He is so smooth.
He is a friend of mine, and don't ridicule him.

GUYS.Golly.No wonder another forum has started.
I am not going to apoligize every time I make a comment. The best teacher I met, would not say aword,to the fellow in mention.
Slapping the hand of any-one he was trying to help, that just would not block, would be enough.
I don't believe any of you are helping a guy who seems to ,.....
I don't even waste my time with any player that I don;t think even plays good. Only the better players deserve a comment.
It is always OK to beat on the messenger.

Well Bill, I don't know the player or anyone that has made a comment so I'm not protecting anybody. I think the guy did a good job. If you don't his playing, that's fine, it's your choice and there's nothing wrong with that but, don't try to tell me I shouldn't like his playing, that's my choice and there's nothing wrong with that either !!

Jeff Playing April's Fool Superbly

Post by Bernie Gonyea »

:D :whoa:

i agree whole-heartedly with Robbie's comment in referring to his friend, Jeff, as a very fine steel player. I see there are many others whom are thinking the same thing. Blocking is good on many songs, if the musician desires to use same on a particular number; I assume it was Jeff's choice not to use it; it sounded mighty good to me.
Bill Mayville; as the messenger, what message were you attempting to put across to all we forumites.? If Jeff is your friend, as you stated, what kind of ridicule would you throw at someone you didn't think was a top notch picker ? Oh, that's right, you wouldn't be wasting your time listening to those kind of players, correct ? :D :whoa:  :whoa:

I had a listen several times. Loved it. Sounded very pleasing to my ears. I thank you for posting this. I'd also like to add that any one who does not think this guy did a good job on the song, needs to seriously reconsider their personal level of opinion a notch lower. Not every one is a Paul Franklin or a Bill Mayville, but I thought he did a great job! He looks up while holding a harmonic chime, Im like ok, he is saying something here. It is often very hard to look up while playing, and that takes confidence in my book. If that is not a sincere moment to you , you must be Mr. Spock. He obviously has skills, and to cut him down for blocking? who said blocking schmocking? I love yiddish humor. :P I just think the harsh criticism is uncalled for. He knows what he is doing and he does it well. Old idea worth revisiting: :idea:Promote The Steel Guitar As Much As Possible And We Will All Be Better Players.

:D the only thing i found here was the music is flowing there is no sound of the bar being lifted off the strings. slow songs need little or no blocking. a very good job of playing..................maby if he played a fast song he would block...............

There is no way I start slamming another individual for his early years of playing. This man may be fairly new to playing steel. It does not matter to me, we all started at the bottom. I would encourage him to keep playing and in time he will improve just as all of us have. Blocking comes with playing time and this gentleman will improve as well.
