First post, old guy

Post by Bob McElroy »

Hi folks,

Been playing (at) guitar and mandolin for about 40 years. I have always had a dedicated slide guitar around including a few low to mid level Dobros. I have made a few attempts at lap playing, but always with the idea that I would/could play the same lines.
I use open tunings frequently and know my 6th chord from my elbow.

So now, the lap bug has bitten again, and I hope you folks endure my questions.

My price point has me looking at the Rogues, SXs etc.
I have an overflowing parts drawer, if I go with humbucker pickup and "standard" mounted tuners I have high quality replacements ready to install.

Would you guys talk me out of either?

For the lowest price point, I'd seriously consider one of the Rondo SX lap steels. Something like this one should be easy to upgrade. You might prefer the sunburst finish instead.

They are not great lap steels, but they're great for the money.

The burst is my fave. The P90 setup is tempting as well; I had a 50's Les Paul Junior that was capable of making all the sounds I require.

Spent the morning looking for a conversion nut I bought at a garage sale years ago to get started, but it's MIA. Tried a bit with my bottleneck and my Tele on my lap, but that was a train wreck. Man, I want to get started! And, after a minor medical procedure today, it's feet up for a few days; perfect time to practice, gotta find that nut...

Welcome aboard old guy!
I must be in the right place again..............finally made it home. Not too long ago I was in a group called FOG (Four Old Guys) but we added a drummer and didn't get too confused as we were still FOG (Five Old Guys) We often wore the Ol' Guys rule T-shirts
Funny thing is we did everything from Fat Bottom Girls to Swingin' Doors Hmmm...........
