Nickel wound or stainless wound is like cars or anything else. Everyone has a different opinion.
Go straight up on this page to Strings and click on.
Go to E9 and you will find a list of the different artists recommended sizes and winds. This will give you an idea of what you may like. For example John Hughey had certain gauge sizes and others have a difference. |

Hi Ray
Like you I am new to PSG . I can tell you from my experience. Stick with the gauge strings your steel manufacturer recommends.I tried using different gauge strings and started having tuning issues.

This link has lots of info about various types of strings you may encounter.
Its a matter of preference ultimately.
One thing to consider is that once your guitar is setup with a specific guage of strings, it is important to change the strings with the same guages. Otherwise you may have to make tuning adjustments to the pedals and levers again.

Can't say I know a lot about strings, but here's what i think I do know. All the strings are plain steel or the pickup wouldn't hear them. Strings 6-10 on an E-9th pedal steel are the "wound" strings, meaning that the inner steel string has a secondary string wound around it. It's is this secondary string that is either stainless steel or nickel or brass or whatever. The stainless are supposedly brightest sounding.
I don't know what "roller wound" means. |

The type of string is up to you, Stainless,Bronze or nickel. Check the 6 th string in any set you buy. Some sets the 6th string is a plain string, some sets the 6th is a wound string. Make sure you use the same as what is on the guitar now. If you don't you will have to do major resetting and changing on the linkage to get the 6th string to tune up. Good Luck and Happy Steelin |
