I have a friend that has an older JCH single 10 on a double frame he is considering selling me. What little I played back in the sixties was on a Fender 400 which I now have. The JCH steel has 3 on the floor and 4 knees. How old, I don't know. I learned steel from this friend back in the sixties and he lowers rather than raising...just the opposite of most of you. I believe that Sonny Curtis lowers..don't know for sure. The friend is asking $1200 for the guitar. .... Does anyone know it there are any teaching videos out there that teach the lowering method? Does Sonny Curtis have any video's out? I don't know if the price of the guitar is right or not....I really would rather know about the possibilities of any teaching video's. Thanks for any info...

Unless there is something wrong with the particular guitar that is a bargain. These guitars have a great reputation - they were built by the late Jimmy Crawford. |

Dave , you don't need a teaching video. Buy the guitar and have it re-set up for raises. Not a problem at all on a JCH. The guitar is very fairly oriced and the money that you spend on a set-up will add value to the guitar. |

Thanks for the responses. I learned to play from the present owner and he has it set up exactly as I want it. I lowered on my Fender 400 in the sixties and the 400 I have now I am setting up the same. I tried to do as most do by raising but it is a.. backwards to me. That year and a half of playing by lowering is in my brain, even after forty years.
Although I haven't played in over forty years, I can still see and feel all the changes. I was told by one steel player that these single 10, three on the floor and four knees are available for less than the
$1200.00 that he is asking but this one is set up the way I am used to. Does anyone know if Sonny Curtis indeed does play that way and any possibility of videos? Thanks again....Dave A. Burley |

Some years back on another forum, Sonny did say that his pedals were set up reverse to everyone else's, i.e. his guitar is tuned like a normal one with the pedals down, and pressing the pedals on his guitar changes the tuning to the normal E9 mode.
Seems like it would be very confusing, at least at first. _________________ On Earth, as it is in Texas |

I used to have a JCH and they are great guitars. $1200.00 is a great deal and if you decide to sell it later on, you'll get your money back and maybe more.

The condensed version of this story as I heard it was that when Sonny started playing and got his first guitar, what he thought he saw was the way he set up his guitar. (as he set it up himself) One day another player let the cat out of the bag. Too late. He just left it like it was. Please correct me if I am in error. But it's a good story regardless!
ps: I'll take 10 of those guitars Dave! _________________ Derby SD-10 4&5 Black!(duh)/

The only steel I would consider other than my Franklin is a JCH. That's the price of an old Sho Bud Pro 1...GET IT !!! START THE CAR !!! _________________ Franklin #130, Melobar Skreemer, Wechter Scheerhorn Resonator, Nashville 112, Boss DD 3 |
