I was in one of the better country/southern rock
"bar" bands in the northeast back in the late 70's-early 80's... Found some of our stuff on reverbnation... This music is over 20 years old now, and was done in a little basement studio in 91... still sounds pretty good to me, for a band that was retired for 10 years when we made these recordings.

I play all the 6 string electric parts on
You Must be Like a Little Child as well..
This stuff ranges from electric bluegrass to traditional country, pop country ,to hard southern rock with Christian lyrics... The steel playing is rudimentary, and slightly pitchy in spots, but hey, I'm not that friggin' good 
I like what I did on Not Still Mine, other wise "meh", as far as my playing is concerned.. The other guys were great.
Its really good stuff, for a local bar band... bob

The guitars were a Pro III that I brutally hacked into an SD 10 w/ 7&4... That was used on Bluegrass Jam, and Not Still Mine...
The brighter sounding guitar I used on I'll be Riding Down the Highway, and I am the Cowboy was a battered up old plywood/mica MSA Classic S10 w/ 6 and 4, and had 3 pickups and a bewildering array of switches hacked into it..
Check out its bright glassy tone on the solo of I am the Cowboy.. as my friend Dave M once said about the tone of that MSA, "So much for MSA's being muddy sounding".. I miss that old wreck... I sold it for parts...
It was a wonderful sounding guitar, but didn't have much sustain.. Had a GeorgeL 10-5 pickup with 5 way switch as well as an old Bud Pickup with coil tap switch.. Had other switches for combining and phasing the pickups, and it still had the original MSA pickup.. It was a mess, but I played it for 20 years, until it just fell apart.
At one point, Sony Records was very interested in signing Rich from what I understand ,but felt the music "lacked direction" .. Needed to move in just one well defined direction instead of the combination of country, rock, bluegrass,gospel.

By the time we made this I was 250 miles from these guys, and only got down there a few times, so a lot of clams were left in the mix as I couldn't get down there to do corrections or punch ins.. Most of it is pretty good, but I hear some pitchiness at times. and some semi clams I would have told them to remove in the mix, and I would have done some patches/punches...
I wish I was still with these guys, but we were kids in the 70's, and are middle aged men now.. a lot of water has passed under the bridge!

| Bob that is some great stuff. I know Rich Gulya and will probably see him this Sat. evening. He works at the copshop with my brother Tom. He's been playing with Mark Miklos and should be on the Heartland Hayride radio show between 6-8pm tomorrow. Tune in on your computer on wdvrfm.org. I'll be playing there too. |

Yeah Ben, Rich is a talented guy. We are close friends to this day. Please let him know I posted this stuff for folks to enjoy.
I played with lots of great players back in jersey... Joe Dalton and I were together for several years as well. I watched him go from a rank newbie to a guitar MONSTER in the span of just a few years. Glad everyone is liking this stuff!.... bob

For a recording from the early 80s, a lot of this sounds sounds like something that could have been recorded right now... both the music and the recording quality. You guys were "Alt Country" before it had a name... I think you would do well today.
Your steel playing sounds great... love the nice bright tone on Riding Down the Highway. I would have made the steel louder in the mix! |

Thanks for the kind words David!... made my day.
I too thought we were ahead of our time, locally at least, but we were mainly a cover band. We had a huge following, playing big rooms and at times would have 1200 people on a saturday night out in the big Long Island clubs. Our manager and agent didn't want us to do originals, as the people were coming to see us play Green Grass and High Tides, Freebird, Devil Went Down, etc..
It wasn't until the band broke up, and was gone for 10 years that we started recording Rich's original music.. Shame really, but in the 70's we were just dumb kids in our early 20's... bob

We've been forum friends for years, now. I've heard many samples of your playing.
What are you worried about, buck-oh?
You've got great tone, and more importantly, timing.
ie. you know when to play; and not to play.
BE HAPPY; DON'T WORRY.

ah, Not worried Chip, just am not all that thrilled with my playing when I hear some of the stuff these guys post... scary!.
Like I said in the original post, I can hear some pitchiness at times, and it bugs the hell out of me.. One clam, and I think I suck... Just the kind of guy I am! lol

Bob,
It's true there are some real "scary" steelers on this Forum; but, then, this is the whole world here, and that's to be expected. It's not like anyone's little corner of the world. It's a big place.
I really didn't here any pitchiness, but this is a matter of subjectiveness. My hearing is going South very quickly these days.
and finally, FWIW - Artists are always their own worst critics.
