Who is this steel player???

Post by Dan Lebowitz »

Can anybody tell me who the steel player is in this video? Some really hot playing! I'm sure he's a legend who's face/sound I should instantly recognize, but I'm kinda new to all this. Thanks.

They seldom come any better than Hal Rugg. His playing was always right for the song and his picking of course concise and well chosen to the song. This clip is a fine demonstration of great palm blocking - something Hal was an absolute expert at.

The track comes from the Wilburn Brothers Show. They always featured some great steel playing. The early shows had Don Helms on steel, the later ones either Hal Rugg or Curly Chalker. It is easy to tell them apart because Curly played a reversed set-up (E-9th on the back neck).

Kind Regards, Walter

That palm blocking has always been the style I have wanted to play and that is the real traditional country song, I have a couple of the George and Tammy LPs which are down to earth country music the way it should be.
