My New Derby !!
Well, it's new to me anyway. Here she is (one thing I've learned here, pictures are required)...
I'm a new player, and this is my first pedal steel; a Derby SD-10, 4x5, serial no. 0153 (built '99-'00). Great tone (when someone else plays it, that is!).
Notice I'm set up right there in the living room (how long will that last?!). A Christmas/Anniversay/Birthday gift from my wife. Of course, shortly after setting up, she asked "can you play into the headphones?" (That says more about the sounds I was making than anything else though).
Many thanks to forumite Jim Whitaker of Ohio for letting me take this baby home. Steel was as good as advertised. Also to Tommy Dodd for tweaking it for me. (Tommy, your next project is teaching me to play it!). Thanks also to several forumites who were very helpful answering my questions via email.
To sum it up....I'm excited!

Hello...
John, welcome to the Derby family. Being from Georgia, your in the right place to learn the instrument. So many great players there. TD of course, one of the best. A friend, Bill Cunningham who I think lives close to you, helped get me started. I hope to make the Atlanta show again one of these days, and renew old friendships...
Welcome...

I also have a Derby S10, that I bought new from Scotty's 7 or 8 yrs ago, but it doesn't have any of the extra features yours has. No Emmons fret board , toggle switch and tone control, and whatever that on/off switch is that you have pictured. It also just came with the stock 3 pedals and 4 knees, and a different pickup.
Is your's a custom job or are they making them all like that now?

Steve, it's a custom job...this guitar was upgraded recently by Ray White. New undercarriage, and he added the tone control panel. I'm not sure about the switch there on the back side, I was told maybe Derby put them in all double cabinets for the neck selector. Not needed on the SD-10s, of course, and it's not even wired to anything, just a dummy switch. And yes, the fretboard is new. When I got it home, in fact, I peeled off the protective plastic that was still on it! Someone added the 4th pedal and 5th knee, not sure if it was Ray or not. Pickup is a Tru-tone, so that was changed at some point as well (I think E-66's are standard in Derby's?)Steve Becker wrote:I also have a Derby S10, that I bought new from Scotty's 7 or 8 yrs ago, but it doesn't have any of the extra features yours has. I'm a happy camper, though!

Derby
John....The early Derby guitars utilized the same cabinets and endplates for both SD-10 and D-10 models (note the cutout for the C6 changer)and also both models featured a neck selector switch, most likely to cover the hole provided on the SD-10's. The one that I formerly owned actually had the switch wired in, but developed a short early on and I bypassed it. The "Derby" decal may be new also, the early guitars featured smaller script so this appears to be a later one with the large "D" removed.. Very fine guitars, best of luck with it.

John I'm envious your Derby is beautiful I had to sell my guitar to pay for our house but We got that done and don't have to worry about getting kicked out. I got sick a few yrs ago and lost our dream home we had a bunch of equity in. We don't have to worry about anyone now except the tax man...He isn't going away, love your guitar Enjoy!!:), Bill
