| Hey yall, I'm new to the forum, this is actually my first post. I am about to buy a new lap and I'm strongly leaning toward an Asher junior with the jason lollar pickup upgrade. I have never played nor heard one live, but it seems to be the only one with two pickups, which is what I am looking for. Any feedback on any lap that you recommend for around a grand would be greatly appreciated. |

Hey Christopher, I think the Asher w/Lollar pick ups would be a fine choice. Pro player, Bruce Bouton uses one. Don't forget about the many custom steel builders, right here on the Forum. Tom Pettingill, Lap King by Jason Dumont, Cruztone, Clinesmith, the list goes on.
This is a great time in our history to be in the market for a lap steel guitar. The talented builders on the forum can build you exactly what you want, even if you don't know what that is, yet. And, you'll likely be pleased at the affordable prices. Personally, I chose a Pettingill Teardrop with NO regrets. Tom's an amazing builder who continues to come up with tempting ideas. I'd agree that the Asher Electro Hawaiian Junior would be a very good choice, especially with the Lollar pickups. You can hear Steinar Gregertsen's Asher Junior on his recordings here.

The EH Jr has been my main lap steel for the last three years or so, it's a great sounding lap steel with plenty of sustain and a focused tone that makes it a breeze to blend with other instruments, it's all over my latest CD.
I have a Seymour Duncan "Seth Lover" humbucker in the bridge position and a GFS "Dream 90" P90 (in humbucker size) in the neck position on mine, I am sure the Lollar pickups will sound great too.

| ...not to sidetrack here, but Steiner, have you tried the GFS Mean 90 as well ? What's the difference if you know... and what about the Seymour Duncan Phat Cat ? Didn't you have that in the Jr at one point ? |

I've never tried the Mean 90, but from what I understand it's basically the same as the Dream 90, only 'more of it'.
The Duncan PhatCat is a great pickup, the Lap King Rodeo I used to own had one and it sounded wonderful.
I also used to have one in the neck position of the Asher Jr, but it was a little too powerful and fat sounding for that position, I prefer neck pickups with a more open and 'airy' tone.
