Best crying steel
Wow. This a tough choice. One that stands out in my mind at a live show though was the great Don Helms. Long ago my band Moss Back Mule Band had the pleasure of doing a 2 night stand at Spurs Club in Oklahoma City with the Drifting Cowboys. I shall never forget planting myself on the floor watching soundcheck. My bandmates thought I was nuts just sitting there in a trance listening to Don warm up. But I wouldn't budge for anything. I'm So Lonesome I could Cry. Oh my! What a sound and what a moment!

Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn "Feelin's", with John Hughey showing how to make the steel cry below the 12th fret. The intro will have the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, it's purest Hughey.
The steel guitar is a hard mistress. She will obsess you, bemuse and bewitch you. She will dash your hopes on what seems to be whim, only to tease you into renewing the relationship once more so she can do it to you all over again...and yet, if you somehow manage to touch her in that certain magic way, she will yield up a sound which has so much soul, raw emotion and heartfelt depth to it that she will pierce you to the very core of your being.

Yes, which session man played this, it has to be Pete Drake.Matthew Prouty wrote:Tammy Wynette - Crying Steel Guitar

John Hugheys crying steel is regarded as the pinnacle and rightly so, his unique "falling" sound coming down the frets combined with the crying is astonishing.

Tammy Wynette/Lloyd Green and Kiss Away
This song is on the D-I-V-O-R-C-E album. It has a killer intro by Lloyd,(anyway I'm sure it's not Pete,) and deserves a listen. Crying steel at it's finest! I just rescued the album from the vault and am giving it a listen.
