Topic: MSA u 12? |

I went and looked at an msa u 12 classic series.A 70's model I would guess.White mica and in pretty good shape.The pedals were so out of tune I couldn't tell if it was a Day or Emmons set up.My problem I have with is it's a 3+3.Thats a little short for a 12 string.What would a guitar like this be worth?Sorry no pics.

The reason I made this post was the old guy that owns it ask me to find out what it was worth.I, like you guys can't put a price on someone elses stuff.The 3+3 has got me baffled.My 10 string is 3+4.So to advance in my playing I think I would need more than the 3+3 but I don't know much about a U 12.Any advice will be well recieved,but I want to be fair with the old guy.Thanks Elbo

Elton, most universals come as 7 and 5, but some guys add more knee levers, but 7 and 5 will keep you busy for three life times

Elton, Micky is correct. You have a 12 string guitar, but it's probably set up as an Extended E9th, not a Universal. Universals, by definition, contain both the E9th and C6th basic pedal changes.
If you want it to be a Universal, you'll need to add a bunch more parts. As it is, I'd say it's worth about 600 to 900, because, even as an Extended E9th, it really needs a knee lever kit to bring it up to a minimum of 3 and 4.

You should ask Jim Palenscar about upgrading it to either an extended E9 with 4 knee levers, or a universal with 7 or 8 pedals and 4 or 5 knee levers. He has a ton of old MSA parts.
For whatever it's worth, I sold my former white mica MSA 12 string for $1,600. However it had 8 pedals and 6 knee levers, as well as some major upgrades, including the Sierra interchangeable pickup system, the wrist lever, triple raise conversion inserts on strings 5 and 6, and a tunable split surgically installed on string 5.

I have a 76 MSA 12 that came to me with 3 x 5. Lynn Stafford put three more pedals on it and with Reece's copedent advice, set it up as a U12. It definitely works as a U12, albeit a somewhat limited U12, if you want to get real deep into jazz. There is still a TON of music to be played on it, and I'm glad I did it.
The biggest problem with turning an old extended E9 into a U12 is the cost. Parts, even old ones, cost $$, plus, if you're like me and aren't mechanical, it costs a lot to have someone do it for you... I got screaming deals on the parts, and on the labor, and it still cost a lot - I'm sure I have more into the guitar than I'll be able to sell it for when my new MSA is finished.

I think you guys are right .It is an ext E9th.Before I read this post I was wondering about adding a lever,as yet don't know how its set up.Thanks.I started a thread about it.
