Jim Palenscar...

Post by Ron Davis »

Just wanna shout out some appreciation for Jim Palenscar.

I went down to his shop today to have him tweek my 2 guitars, which he did in a big way.
They's both playin' like butta...! :)

I really felt privleged to hang out at his shop.
(He couldn't get rid of me until he locked up. lol)
Seems like every chance he got, he was teachin' me something, or showin' me something on the psg.
What a cool guy. :)

Also got to meet Rick Schmidt, another great player & a cool guy.

I was truly inspired by both of these guys & look forward to hangin' out down at Jim's again.

Thanx, Jim...!

;^)
Much appreciation!

I agree. I bought a guitar from Jim a while back. He's a great guy. Really helpful. His store is a real resource for Californians. I wish I lived nearer.

Jim is great. I love going to his shop. It's 90 miles from my house, so I can't go too often, which is probably a good thing because if it was closer, I'd be hanging out there all the time and never get any work done.

I agree with all of you - Jim Palenscar is a complete prince & the wizard of steel guitar. He knows just what to do to make them sing. Why, he even gives sound medical advice on my cats! You won't find a better man. Thanks for everything Jim!

As for Rick Schmidt ..... he has talent far beyond the comprehension of we mere mortals. If there was any justice in the world he would have Grammys sitting all over his house.....

Both these guys are like most great players, it seems.
Super talented & modest to the bone.
I sure do respect that.

Well I am going to jump in here on this one too

I had know Jim via Steel Shows and had never been to his store. I found that it is not only a store but a repair / rebuild shop as well. He has the equipment to do the job.

And I agree with all the other comments he is one of those people that you always feel like you have learned something from just anytime you are around him. He also has the ability to make you feel that there is something special about yourself too.

WHAT A GREAT GUY - AND WHAT A GREAT ASSET TO THE STEEL GUITAR FAMILY.

I like to think of Jim's shop as "Steel Guitar Disneyland" because I always have trouble going to sleep the night before I'm going down there the next day! LOL

I needed some knee levers and other parts for an EMCI for a client of mine. Jim made them up at a very reasonable price. Perfect, precision, beautiful parts, in a timely fashion. Jim is totally the man. Thanks Jim!

I agree, Jim's the best and has the coolest shop I've ever been in! He's got my old Sho-Bud working great and seems more than willing to teach you something on the psg. It's probably a good thing that I live about 4.5 hrs. away! He has a good variety of PSG's and also vintage lap steels too! If you need some work done on your steel he's the man to see!

You know, with all this talk of how great a repairman Jim is, and how cool the shop is, it has been overlooked that Jim is also an outstanding player.

I had a chance to hear him on a gig and I was really impressed.

Jim please consider this to be an invitation to play at next year's L.A. steel jam.

I too want to weigh in publicly on Jim's hospitality. I was visiting Southern CA this summer and dropped by his shop to look around (newbie player and had never met him). To my dismay the shop was closed (it was his day off) - to my surprise, he opened the door and welcomed me into the shop like I was a regular! Had a very pleasant time and picked up a few necessities - he even tried to track down some local live venues to hear some good steel playing! (and Jim, BTW, the diner at the end of the pier was a great lunch spot). Thanks again!

I would have to think that Jim developing an allergy to animals is the greatest thing that has happened for the Steel Guitarist of the West Cosst.
The loss to the Veterinary World is a Boon the steel guitar.

Jim is a great player, as well as a teacher.
He kindly taught me some basic stuff, made it relate to me, gave me some pointers, etc...

When Rick Schmidt & I were talking, I had mentioned about finding this forum & how it was like hitting the "Motherlode" of pedal steel folks & resources, & how I had found Jim through this forum. (Rick's immense respect for Jim is very obvious.)
Rick's reply was that finding Jim Palenscar was most definitely hitting the Motherlode... I concur. :)

What's so great to me is how Jim was so cool about helping me out. Never treated me like a "newbie", but rather like a fellow lover of the pedal steel, disregarding my level of ability (or lack of it. lol)

Meeting Jim is like going to see an old friend. :)
