Something different. (for me that is)

Post by Dave Seddon »

If you have seen my You Tube contributions you will realise by now I am not a "speed picker," I like to play the slow ballad type things. Having said that I am a big fan of Scott Joplins music, and my wife suggested I try something of his, so I decided with the help of BIAB (Joplin Style) I would make up a little melody that I thought Scott Joplin might do If he were a Steel Player. Of course I borrowed a couple of Emmons licks to help me out but I don't think he'll mind. Hope you like it.
Cheers Dave.

I can't comprehend the mind-set of somebody who immediately thinks of the money-making prospects of something he has just witnessed.

I dislike mercenary instincts in musicians, and hope that Dave Seddon feels the same.

Dave, Some excellent picking there. Like Richard says, its excellent blocking.
And MAN how good that guitar sounds ;-)
You also demonstrate the guitar's sustain at 1:20..what a neat little thing, and so well balanced volume wise!

As for the moneymaking thing that was mentioned...we do tend to measure things in money. I'm not gonna say anything against either you or Dale, you both have good points. What I do know is that Dave has both feet planted firmly on the ground and mainly puts out his music because he loves what he's doing. I could maybe see him putting out another CD with tunes from his youtube delights. With his ability, he could easily do this. Whether or not he wants to, well that is for Dave to decide.

What tickles me to death is the way he plays that guitar I built for him.
It's said that you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear...well Dave has proven that adage wrong.
...Or did I really build that good a steel?

I do know that it makes me feel good to hear him play it. Keep going Dave.

Nice playing, Dave.

How do you reconcile this thought with the fact the Dave has made his cassettes "available for purchase".
I put cash on the barrelhead for the one that has "Telstar" on it, at a Convention one year.
I truely hope Dave got the money.

I think that what prompted me to make that comment was the sheer opportunism of the posters way of thinking.

Of course, musicicians must earn a living, but surely a little more tact than the average market trader would be appropriate.

My post was meant more as complement to Dave's playing and original composition, in much the same way I would tell my Mother that her cooking is good enough to sell in a restaurant, BTW she doesn't, she gives it away...

Richard, methinks you take this way too seriously.

I believe that Dale said what he said to emphasize how well Dave played. I think all he meant was "This recording is good enough to sell".

Gentlemen I am extremely grateful for all your compliments. It is not very often I get inspired to do something but as Piano was actually my first instrument (from the age of 3) and having passed 7 exams I listen to a lot of piano music and I just love the Joplin style, and as I said my wife Chris put me up to doing this.I am grateful that you think it is good enough to sell and I certainly understand what Richard is saying.
The CD that I have already made, I think I have probably given more away than I've actually sold.
By the way Pete I think you have me mixed up with someone else as I have never recorded "TELSTAR."
Anyhow thank you all again and to the other people who have commented particularly Mike Verdetto a really nice genuine guy.
Cheers Dave.

Dave, Looks like I mixed up the song... Let's see if I can mess up the album...
Don't you have an album out called "Behind Bars"?
That is the one I have.

Pete you are talking about Dave Hayward (unless I am very much mistaken.) Another great British steeler.
Thank you Dave H for your compliment, I'm sure you have really made Bent's day. Richard I'll send you the track, how do you want it< BIAB or Mp3. Sorry to be short but it's Rugby time and I don't miss Tigers for anything.
Cheers Dave.

Dave, darn right, David H made my day. And Ken Byng and the rest. I appreciate the kind words you say about my creation. I still say that Dave S can make the lowliest steel guitar sound great. It's those hands you know....

That's a catchy tune. And you have nice touch on the steel. Well done.
