Here is a clip from the Georgia Mountain Fair Band show last Saturday night. The singer was one of our guests, 18 year old Courtney Arnold from Greenville, SC. Man, does she sing!
No rehersal as you can probably tell. The guests walk on and tell us the tune and key (if they know it) and we try to not have a train wreck.

Hey Bill,
I like her phrasing. You played a great break. It's so good to hear somebody this side of the Mississippi doing real country music.
I know what you mean about the guest singers thing. I actually like that better than a structured show. Yes, they usually don't know the key, or sometimes they tell you and you kick it off and they sing it in another key anyway....and you have to modulate to something else. All fun, and I love it that way. I believe sometimes people get so wound up in perfection that it takes the fun out of the music......which is what music is suppose to be about anyway.
Was that Barry on the banjo?

Very low in the mix is how you play banjo on a slow sad song.
Yes Rick, that is Barry Palmer on the banjer, mandolin, fiddle,and whatever. He has been in this group since he was just starting to play in the early 80's. You know in our part of the country you gotta have a banjo in the band. Sort of like a fiddle in Texas.

Papa Joe,
I had taken a shower that particular day so they were lucky.
Seriously, there is an empty chair to my left where James "Chief" Childers, one of my mentors who has played guitar on this show since 1957, had been sitting earlier in the evening. James had a stroke last year and is still not back to 100%. He had tired and left the stage before this segment.
I think I posted this earlier but here is another segment from one of last year's shows. Brad Williams is singing Statue Of A Fool.
