Thanks guys...well the pedal steel is a complex instrument and a lot of practice and work to play it. I started in 1968 with Julian Tharpe as my tutor and today I'm still learning. Everyone both men and women that take up the pedal steel have my appreciation and thanks for keeping this versatile instrument alive.

Susan Alcorn

Post by Joe McHam »

Jim has nominated Susan Alcorn to be the next featured steel:
Hi Joe,

Not sure if you wanted me to pick out your next steeler, or whether you have already done so. But if you're asking me, I'd like to nominate Susan Alcorn. I think it would be great to highlight people who are doing things on steel that are out of the ordinary and Susan certainly fits the bill.

Susan will be featured in a couple of weeks... enjoy!!

I too feel honored to be included on this site. I also feel a little embarrassed to be mentioned on the same page as Jim and Susan, both of whom are far better players than I am.
Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Mike Perlowin

Mike we are honored to present you.. the scope the type of music that you do is commendable. I applaude you and the others have chosen to take the pedal steel to new heights. I spoke rencently with the Pops Conductor at the Houston Symphony which is a World Class Orchestra of 97 symphonic musicians and the challenges to play on that syphony stage reaches far. The training for an orchestra musician starts way before high school. Out of 100 musicians audition and maybe 2 get selected. The Houston Symphony musicians have to go from a simple 3 chord piece to Bach.....each time they perform.. There is little room for error.. So with that said I believe you have earned your place here.. That's my story and I'm sticking to it...
