Sorry... I am sure there are lots of threads where this comes up but I am just sick of it....

So I have been playing steel for two years now... and I got into it cause I really do love those old country players... and I was copying steel lines on a guitar for a band I play in and I got addicted to the sound.... yada yada....

So the other night I'm at a rehearsal with a band for a pickup gig where they are playing some country (but they played it terribly) and a bunch of blues and motown stuff....

Within the first 20 minutes of playing one of the guys says to me at least 3 times "Sorry... not much of a COUNTRY tune" And I flipped out a little and told him "Now I am going to have to pack up and leave if you keep insinuating that this instrument can only play country!"

This is after playing a blues and funk tune where I easily played the best solo of the group (not being snooty.... these guys just arent the best players)

As I grow into this instrument it is really starting to annoy the crap out of me how it is so pigeon holed!!!

The most egregious thing I saw recently is when I put the Buddy Emmons "Four Wheel Drive" into iTunes and it came up COUNTRY!!???! WTF!?!?

Sorry.. I know most of you have probably been there and gotten over this but I just had to rant to someone and I know you all understand!

Hell I still haven't found a country band to play with... I would LOVE to be playing some country..... Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green

Plenty of room out there for players able to play outside the country idiom on steel. Keep at it and some big doors will open for you that you don't expect.
Try to play with guys better than you no matter what the style of music is.
