Hey guys and gals, I am living and working in Ruidoso, New Mexico for the summer and fall. I am performing with the Staerkel Master Musicians (select members of the Arizona Opry cast) at Mountain Annie's, Fridays and Saturdays.

I was just wondering if there are any steel players close by?

Also, are there any steel guitar clubs or any steel shows based in NM?

Just curious! I'm here until October 31st and would love to meet some of you if possible!

Thanks, Michael T.

I'll be playing with Felix and the Los Gatos in Albuquerque on July 10th at there Cd release party. Then somewhere near there for this art music "conduction" run by J.A. Deane on July 11th. I'll be playing a lap steel unless a pedalsteel is handy. I'm around for a few days so maybe some more gigs will pop up.

Sounds like a plan Fred!!! How have you been?

Bob, I can't make it on Saturday, but Sunday might be a possibility if its later in the afternoon. I think its about a 4 hour drive. Do you know what time your gig is on the 11th?

I have a question for you Albuquerque steel players.
Did any of you old timers (like myself) ever take lessons on the west side of Albuquerque at a place called the Hannan Conservatory of Music?
I was born and raised in New Mexico and my dad worked road construction.
Oft time, we would move into Albuquerque in the winter time and, for a time, I took lessons at the afore mentioned facility.

Mike Castleberry lives in Tijeras and is a great player. John Feldman plays around Abq with the Curio Cowboys. Ronnie Green plays with a band from Colorado but lives in Des Moines. Other than that i don't know of anybody else.

Thanks guys!

I would love to meet you and hear some of you play. Seems like nobody is very close to me, so I'm not sure how thats all gonna work out.

How about West Texas, say from Lubbock to El Paso?

Michael,
Did you ever do any business with "Folk of the Wood" in Ruidoso?
I don't think they are selling any instruments anymore.
I bought a couple of guitars from them.

Erv, I just checked the Folk of the Wood website and it appears that they are only doing instructional materials and cd sales. I did email them to see about meeting other local musicians, so maybe I will get the whole story. They are in Alto which is right where our house is! Thanks!

Lee, where is Belen???

Thanks guys, I will do my best to get to see you, but my schedule is probably the same as yours, fri and sat.

Did I see something about a steel show in Albequerquerquerquereque, lol? I never can get that one right!!!

Michael - Belen is just south of Albuquerque, on the interstate. Frenchy is a great guy and a good picker. He would probably know of any other steelers in the area. Here is a link to his web site:

With regard to Folk of the Wood, in Ruidoso, the one time I was in there, they had a room full of all kinds of acoustic instruments. Almost every instrument had paper wrapped around the neck, under the strings, making it impossible to pick one up and play it. There were several signs in the store, warning patrons not to touch any of the instruments.

How 'bout Carmen T Acciaioli in Taos. He has been with Michael Hearne and South by Southwest forever.
Great player. Great band

SxSW is playing around the area. Check out Mikes' website
http://www.michaelhearne.com/index.html

Mike Castleberry and Tony Chavez are both around Albuquerque and could probably put you on to some leads in the area. Tonys website is www.unwoundnm.com Also Jerry Wallace (True Tone pickups) is down in Artesia NM.

Michael,

I am spending a couple of weeks in Ruidoso (July 1st to the 19th) doing nothing. We hike a lot in the Lincoln National Park, so I go through Alto every day or so. I haven't played steel in months, so you wouldn't learn anything from me Smile

Our house is on Nogal street just south of the library and new golf course.

If you're bored, send me an email(it goes right to my phone) and we can arrange a get together. I'm a little paranoid about posting an open phone number because of spam bots, but I'll try and update my profile.

I stopped by Mountain Annie's around 3:00, but it was closed. Your poster looked good. You must do horns and brass too.

Bill
