Topic: Fender Bassman 10 |

Does anybody have any experience with Fender Bassman 10s? - 4x10 speakers, closed cabinet, no on-board reverb, 2 6l6s - probably 50 watts.
I'm wondering if this is one of those lost treasures - cool amps but not particularly collectable.
And a very reasonable cost.

I cannot speak for myself but I recall Curly Chalker used to use two of them in the early years and that says an awful lot for them. I, ala Jimmy Day and Bobby Garrett, used the same basic amp but with a 15 inch speaker and a tremelo function. You see, I liked Duane Eddy too !!
And do check out Ken Fox and some of his work in this Forum section.

| I've owned one for quite a few years now. It is my favorite amp. This is a later model with a middle control on both channels. The channels are labled "Bass Instrument" and "NORMAL". |

I believe that the Super Reverb chassis will slide right in that Bassman 10 cabinet. Advantage? closed back means nice low end punch, and you would have that great Super Reverb circuit. The Bassman 10 as a stock amp, I have found to be thin sounding, but if you have someone like Ken Fox work over that circuitry, that Bassman 10 has great potential.
I have a Bassman 10 that I'm going to resurrect. At home, sometimes I jumper that Bassman cab to my twin, and it sounds very sweet--punchy little dude. Mine still has the original oxford speakers. Of course, I pull back a little power off that twin, so I don't hash those old speakers. 
If a person is limited for funds, the Bassman 10 will give you a great tube amp project that will yield a fine amp--steel or six string. My friend hot-rodded one of these amps, dropped in a big output tranny and ran a pair of 6550 tubes, shoe-horned a pair of 12's and a pair of 10" speakers into that cab, and he had him a cool 100 + watt amp that sounded incredible. Of course when he got done with it, it was about as heavy as a supertwin.  |
