| Does anyone know of a video that talks about a volume swell (if thats the right term)In a lot of older stuff, and some new, its that wah or crying sound although I am not sure of the proper terminology. |

I couldnt find the album version but on Wayne Hancocks "Freight Line Blues there is a good example. Plus here is a great one by Kayton Roberts in which he does it quite a bit starting at about 50 seconds into the video.

OK, Kayton is using the tone control to get that sound. He's basically striking a note with the tone turned counter-clockwise, or to the bass position, and then he turns it clockwise to get the crying sound. This is the same technique used to do a volume swell using the volume control.
If you'd rather use pedals - a volume pedal is used for volume swells and a wah pedal is used for the crying sound (which could be thought of as a tone swell).

If you want to get this effect with a pedal, a true wah wah pedal is NOT what you need. A wah wah pedal (like a Vox or Crybaby) has an active circuit that gives you more of the Jimi Hendrix type wah effect.
There is a reissue Fender pedal that has volume and PASSIVE tone control (the same as a tone control on a guitar) which you can get from any authorized Fender dealer or website like Musiciansfriend.com. They cost about $120.
I personally prefer to control volume with a pedal and tone with my finger on the guitar's tone control.

| Ok cool, a "doo wah". So does that mean to get that effect I will have to buy special components or does a tone control on a lap steel have the potential to give that effect and the extra components are just another option? I ask because I have purchased a Tremblay lap steel but haven't gotten it yet and want to learn all I can before I do. |
