Our friend Jim is really shining on THIS live Ty Herndon show from '92. What guitar was that Jim? It sounds just killer.

Thanks for posting Bill. Indeed, Jim sounds fantastic. Was hoping his thumb pick wouldn't fall off. I don't think I could play with my thumb pick in that position....Eddie

Hi, Guys ... Thanks so much for your kind words on this one.
Bill, that was my old black 1976 Emmons push/pull. Although I've been a Mullen man for many years now, I have to admit that this old Emmons was my most favorite guitar that I've ever owned. I really miss it.
Eddie, I couldn't help but laugh out loud when I read where you mentioned my thumb pick falling off. There's been more than one occasion that I suddenly found my thumb pick flying out onto the dance floor in the middle of a fast song.
I now use a Golden Gate thumb pick and wear it a little further on my thumb than I used to.
Again, thanks so much, everyone ... your comments are greatly appreciated. I kinda miss playing that song, it was a really fun tune.

Mighta known. I'll tell you Jim, I love the sound of that quad pickup Mullen you play and I'm sure you bring the best out in any axe you sit at. But I know this much; if I was close to one of the push-pull wizards ( ie. Bobby Bowman ) I'd have an Emmons push-pull. To my ear there is just nothing to match that tone. It wouldn't be a great idea for me to have one here though...unless I traveled to some distant mecca and trained to be a push-pull mechanic first.that was my old black 1976 Emmons push/pull

I have to agree, Bill. You know, as much as I love my Mullen guitar (I've had four of them that played and sounded absolutely fantastic), to my ear there's just nothing like the sound of an old Emmons push/pull guitar. In my book, they have the "magic sound" and I like to think of them as the Stradivarius of steel guitars.Bill Miller wrote:To my ear there is just nothing to match that tone.
Here's something you might get a kick out of. Someone emailed me about that "Shameless" video and said the reason that my Emmons sounded so good was because it was black!

I just love those old Emmons guitars. I've owned two Emmons push/pull guitars: the black '76 Emmons in the video (which was originally Gary Hogue's guitar) and a 1969 Emmons that I bought from a fellow at a really good price.
When it comes to working on a steel, I'm kind of in the same boat regarding the mechanics of it. I can work on an all-pull guitar all day long, but working on a push/pull just eats my lunch. And there's a story there ...
My very first Emmons was a black 1969 push/pull D-10 with 8 & 5 and I bought it for $400. At first glance it was the filthiest thing I ever saw and looked like a real piece of crap with fret boards that were scratched and really bad looking. I took it completely apart, cleaned and polished everything, rebuilt it with all the right parts in the right places (even ordered brand new Emmons fret boards for it), and when I finished it was beautiful and looked like new ... but I never could get everything adjusted correctly. It played horrible and wouldn't stay in tune for anything.
I ended up taking it over to Gary Hogue to see what he thought of it and he said, "I know a guy I can take it to who'll do miracles with it" so I left my guitar with him and in a few days Hogue called me back to say my guitar was ready.
Gary had it set up and was playing it when I got to his house and then I played it. I don't know who he took it to, but it played fantastic and sounded great. Problem was, Gary liked it, too, and wanted to buy it. So, I sold it to him and never even got to play it on a gig ... I never could say "No" to Gary whenever he wanted to buy one of my guitars!

John, thank you so much! Good to hear from you. It was a great pleasure meeting you at the Dallas show.
I thoroughly enjoyed the visits and talks we had.
You're correct about the video being a bit special to me. It really brings back some fond memories of that guitar. I've played some push/pulls in my day that really felt good, but never one that played like that particular guitar did.
It played like a dream and was the only push/pull I've ever played that was close to rivaling my Mullen in feel.
Again, thanks so much and here's hoping you have a great day ... please pass on my regards to David as well whenever you see him.
