I've just tried to import a picture that I have in my Facebook album. It's my picture, of course, and I thought I'd successfully transferred it to my photo-gallery in my computer. It's there, alright, but when I tried to move it to the Forum, I was was told that the file wasn't supported(??!!?)
It shows that it's a BMP file (is that right?) How do I turn it into a jpeg, if that's what I need to do?
Why is it that things that should be simple are so complicated???? It's okay - that's a rhetorical question, but I get so weary of seeing messages on my computer screen that are in an alien language! _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

Point taken, but I suppose I'm really asking why the Forum didn't accept that particular type of 'file'. _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

Maybe it's related to the other image problems being discussed here: http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=178403 |

Roger, b0b or Wiz might be able to tell you...I would only be guessing as to why bmp is not supported. |

The BMP file is a bitmap image format developed by Microsoft and commonly used in the Windows operating system for storing icons. .BMP is not a web image file type and is not normally used on web pages on the public Internet. It is an uncompressed raw image type that is used to produce desktop icons and master artwork that will be reduced into web formats. Bitmap files tend to be very large in file size and are non-compressible, but, by using an image editor with built-in converters it can be converted into .gif, .jpg or .png web formats.
From this Wikipedia article we learn the following:
Quote: |
The BMP file format, sometimes called bitmap or DIB file format (for device-independent bitmap), is an image file format used to store bitmap digital images, especially on Microsoft Windows and OS/2 operating systems.
Uncompressed bitmap files (such as BMP) are typically much larger than compressed (with any of various methods) image file formats for the same image. For example, the 1058×1058 Wikipedia logo, which occupies about 271 KB in the PNG format, takes about 3358 KB as a 24-bit BMP file. Uncompressed formats are generally unsuitable for transferring images on the Internet or other slow or capacity-limited media. |

I convert my bit maps in windows paint. I click on save and at the bottom there is a save as type. I scroll down with the arrow till I get jpeg and then save it. _________________ heavily medicated for your safety |

Roger ,
the easiest way to convert your photo files to jpg is to open them using Windows Picture and fax viewer.
It will convert most photo files to jpg format.
Right click on your photo and choose "open with" then choose the photo/fax viewer.
At the bottom should be the tools menu, choose the little diskette icon and then use the drop down "save as type" menu to choose jpg.
While the file may still be too large to upload to the forum, it will be a jpg.
TO reduce the actual file size you may have to edit it with a program such as "picture it" or photo shop .. most have a free version that will allow you to re-save a photo specifically for email or web use where hi resolution is not necessary.
You could also email the offending photo to me and I can do it for you and email it back. |
