Is there an adjustment that can be made so that Forum-generated Private Emails will go to my 'inbox'? I keep marking them as 'Not Junk', and they move instantly to my inbox, yet the next one goes to 'Junk...' again.

And another thing: Because of this, I now monitor my junk-mail folder (so that I don't lose messages like the ones I've described), and I find it full of spam that has Oriental characters rather than standard English as the subject matter. I've never noticed these before, but I get a lot now. Does anyone know the reason for this?

depending on what service you are using for your email, you should be able to "white List" any sender. That should prevent them from going into the spam folder

What email client are you using to read email? If you use "Windows Live Mail" you just click on "Not Junk" when you open a message, to stop that sender from going to the Junk folder. You can also right click on incoming messages from trusted domains and add the entire domain to your whitelist (ditto to blacklist a domain).

The Chinese characters are misdirected spam that was supposed to go to Chinese recipients. The Botnetted computers sending it got bad instructions from the Mothership.

Roger, the way I have to do it in my Rogers Yahoo! mail is when I am in the web mail email(not my email client software) I enter the email address of the misdirected mail into my contact list. At first I pressed "not junk" but that wouldn't work for me. I think the reason being that my spam filter is set pretty high. But that is needed in this day and age.

I tried right-clicking on the message but I saw no option to 'save' the address and render it safe. My junk-filter IS set high - it only allows senders actually in my 'contacts' (I'll try Bent's suggestion).

These Chinese - or, anyway, Oriental - characters are a mystery; I've never seen any before, and now the vast majority of the 'junk' I get has them in the subject-line - it's been like that for about three months.

What's email client software, please? I have a Yahoo account but that's just for Ebay - 99% of my mail comes to my Hotmail address. I think I use Windows Live Mail, but I'm not certain - I have my Hotmail address 'favourited', so that's how I reach it.

An email client is a desktop program that you launch to receive, compose and send email. It is an application. It sounds to me like you are using a web browser to send and receive email, via a free email hosting service. You will have to investigate the email options available to figure out how to flag or un-flag email as junk/not junk.

The word "favourited" tells me that your browser might be either AOL or Internet Explorer. The browser is acting as your email client, in that it is used to send and receive email, rather than a stand alone desktop application.

Roger,

Since all forum-generated mail comes from a single server and has a common subject line, you can set up a mail "rule" within Hotmail to automatically move messages from b0b's server into your inbox. This bypasses any algorithms/filtering problems the junk mail filter is causing.

To create a mail rule from within your Hotmail inbox, do the following:

  1. Click the Options dropdown menu in the right corner.

  2. Select More Options.

  3. In the Customize your mail section, click Automatically sort e-mail into folders.

  4. Click New Filter. The Edit filter screen displays.

  5. Within Step 1, select either From address or Subject from the dropdown menu, then enter the appropriate info in the text box. For example, I believe all the PM subject lines contain "Steel Guitar Forum", or something similar. You could also use "steelguitarforum.com" as the From address (or whatever the actual address is; I can't remember).

  6. Within Step 2, select the Inbox radio button to send mail that matches the new filter to your inbox.

  7. Click Save. Hotmail now will use the filter to scan any incoming mail and move messages that match it to your inbox, overriding the default junk mail filter.

And if you're not using the Hotmail web interface to read/send mail, ignore the above Wink

Thanks, Wiz, thanks, Jeff....

I think I've set the filter successfully - we'll see!
