Peavey Classic 50 Tube Set

Post by Max W. Thompson »

I am trying to resurrect a mid 1990s Peavey Classic 50, and I need a recomendation from the tube amp guys as to what tubes to buy and who has them cheap. I know I need 3 12AX7s and 4 EL84s, but I have no clue as to what Peavey used as original stock or what would sound good for using this amp for blues/rock/country.
Oh, and I need a source for 5 chicken head knobs, too.

Classic 50

I used JJ's last time I re-tubed my Classic 50.
I got them through Tube Depot they seemed to have decent prices on their tubes.

Thanks for the info, guys. I've got tubes in the amp now, and it makes a sound. Not a good sound, mind you, but a sound. I sounds choked, and the notes cut off immediately. No sustain. I was wondering if a capacitor is not holding charge? Any ideas on an easy fix before I try to send it back to Peavey?

I talked to one of my buddies at Peavey and they put tubes from china in at the factory. You can get Chicken head knobs lots of places, Allparts has them here in Texas. There are tons of mods out there for the Classic 50 to make it a better sounding amp. I did the bassman mod on one of my 50's and it's great for Blues stuff.

I got it back from Peavey day before yesterday, and now it works.

Anyone have a spare footswitch for one of these laying around?
