Jeff Newman course ...

Post by Thomas Ludwig »

Does anybody know the Jeff Newman course "Up From the Top", a 4 hour DVD that's covering the A&B pedal only?
I play C6 lap steel for 5 years now and I'm looking for a good way to start E9th pedal steel.

Has anybody used this DVD for the start ?

I borrowed the a and b pedal course from a pal which is good but found i had worked out most of the material on it myself - I found Jeff's F and D lever courses really excellent and beneficial and i'd recommend them very highly. They also incorporate enough info about pedals a and b to keep you right as well.

It does depends what your e9th set up is of course - if you don't have the d and f levers that take the E strings 4 and eight up and down then maybe go for the a and b pedal course!

Thomas,

The A and B course is pretty basic, but it gets you moving horizontally up and down the neck, however; if you already have been playing non pedal for a while you may find it to be too basic. If you have a pretty good grip on A and B now, then I would suggest following Tim's advice or going with another course like Herby Wallace's or Mickey Adams (I've never used either), or better yet find a teacher. Good luck.

I do agree with Zach.
As an absolute beginner I had found it great and very useful, together with his D and F levers books.
But since you should be already more skilled on the pedal steel it may be a lil' bit too basic.
