Rusty Young - Fire Up Boomerang

Post by Jim Lindsey (Louisiana) »

I thought this was pretty cool ... Rusty Young from Poco has always been one of my great steel guitar heroes (along with a myriad of other great players) and I've listened to Poco music since I started playing steel in the mid '70s. But, I've never had the opportunity to see Rusty play live. So, I finally did some YouTube watching of Rusty's stuff and came across this one ...

I wanted to share this with all the Rusty fans out there (as well as some who may not have heard him yet).

I nearly had heart failure when his guitar fell over at the end of the song, though. But, as you can see in the video, Rusty had a good sense of humor about it. :)

Thank you very much for that Jim, this is the man who got me thinking about the Steel Guitar, in fact after seeing him blow the band America off the stage (poco were supposed to be the support) and the roof off the Apollo in Glasgow with his Moserite Guitar, I never stopped thinking about the Steel Guitar, and I see he is still the great showman of old.

I just went to see Poco the other night at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia. It's 10 minutes from my house, so how could I not go. Poco came on after Pure Prairie League and both bands consisted of only three guys. Poco was Rusty Young, Paul Cotton and Jack Sundrud. No drummer. They did about 15 songs and Rusty only played pedal steel on two of them, Heart of the City and one I didn't know. I was kind of disappointed as it was the first time I'd ever seen him live since I first got swept away by his playing back in the 70's. He had a blue Carter S-10.

Wow ... only 3 pieces in Poco? And only 2 songs on steel out of 15? Man, I have to agree that I'd feel a little disappointed, too.

I've never had the opportunity yet to see Rusty play live, but I hope if I ever get to see him that there'll be several songs played on steel. Flip side of the coin is that I'm such a Rusty fan that I'd still enjoy the show even if he only played one song on steel. :)

My band's version of "Magnolia" is lifted directly from this 2004 Poco video. I love it.

Three Pieces in a recent show!??
I'd be VERY disappointed.

Man, Joey, that was some great stuff ... nothing like that classic Rusty Young sound! :) I love it. Thanks for posting that link here, Joey. :D
