Saluda on Sunday

Post by Stephen Gambrell »

I started a new thread, just so I could personallly say some things. Buddy and Charles started the Southern Steel Convention back in 1987, and I felt tremendous pride and honor when Charles asked me to help out, after we lost our friend, and Brother, Buddy Walker.
There were a lot of players there yesterday, including Chuck Campbell and David West, who didn't play, and we still had music going till nearly 7 o'clock---and that's starting at 10 A.M! Everyone came, and wanted to do their best for Buddy. And I think they did.
Charles and Jerry Reece stayed on the go all day. Jerry was either running sound, or onstage, and Charles had a full day, just being Charles. Bill Ferguson worked his fanny off(never did mess his hair up, though Image), running the booth selling Buddy's stuff, emceeing, and playing. Herby, John, Walter---in a word, CLASS. All the backup pickers did their usual great job, and all the steelers who played seemed to add a little extra lick, just for Buddy.
The folks in the kitchen deserve a pat on the back, for keeping the troops fed. They're kinda like drummers---you don't notice 'em, but there couldn't be a show without 'em.
It was a great moment when Linda Walker was presented with the beautiful quilt that Wayne Smith's wife had made. Thanks to Bob Evens for donating it. And speaking of donations, thanks to ALL those who donated time, money, talent, and effort into this show, to make it special in Buddy's memory and honor.
I apologize for any scheduling errors, I'll try and get it right next time. I never said I was an expert Image!
Thanks to all the folks who came out, to listen to music, visit with friends, and have a day of good clean fun. Y'all are the folks who make this possible. Thanks to the Shriners, for the use of the building, and the incredible work that they do for the kids. This is a non-profit show, and the Shriners' Hospitals receive all the proceeds from the show.
To those of you who couldn't make it, you don't know what you missed.
And most of all, thanks to God, without Whose Divine help, none of this would have been possible.
See y'all in May! God bless!!!

let me just also say that being there this past Sunday was just too much fun for anyone to have .

The ceremony for Buddy was outstanding and uplifting..there is no doubt that he IS and will be missed as this show goes forward.

Buddy's legacy stands.

These shows are amazing..seeing and visiting friends that we haven't seen in several months and making new friends sure makes it all worth while.

If it wasn't for these shows we would probably never see our neighbors !

We drove 2 hours South and had a chance to see our neighbor Bryan Hudson who only lives 30 minutes away ! Ya gotta love it...

Thanks Stephen, Charles, Bill etc. for making my bandmates and I comfortable for our first time Saluda playing adventure..we sure had a ball..

see ya all in May...

Stephen,
Thanks for starting the thread. I never met Buddy Walker, but from all I have heard he was a great guy and worked hard to make the Saluda show the great success that it has been. I have only met Charles by phone, but he was extremely nice to me and condescended to let me have a set on the May show.

Tony,
I have tried to get one of our trips routed by your place so I could meet you in person, but it hasn't worked out. I'll be there for May Saluda show -- so here's a direct order: Be There! (You know it isn't polite to disobey an order from your elders.) By the way, check out the picture of you and Lloyd Green in the photo album on my web site. (And our grand-daughter still goes to sleep each night to your "Long Black Limousine.)

Tony,
How about posting the names of your young men they were outstanding and you hung in there with them quite well. Another fine Saluda show.

Stephen,
You did a great job handling the pickers and their playing spots...Kudos to all of you for making the Saluda show another biggie...I'm sure Buddy was delighted...
I want to express my appreciation to all of the staff and food workers, and to the many talented artists that helped make this one a 'night to remember'...Great show, great talent , and used in a way to continue the 'Saluda tradition'...
And I am grateful for allowing this Western Kentucky Hillbilly to be a part of the get-together..Thank you all very much..
Peace and good health to you all...

I would like to second all the good words about Saluda. I am a wanna be steel guitar player . I will soon be 77 years old .I never expect to be good with my playing , but I have a great time trying. I attended my second trip to Saluda and have been to steel shows at Kannapolis twice and Sanford N.C. once I enjoyed all these shows .but I have to say that the Saluda show was by far the best show I have ever attended. And Rob Parker you deserve credit for the beautiful singing you did, I thank you ......

The young guys had a ball..so did the old guy...

Vernon..yes..
Buddy Dukes.. AC Guitar and vocals
TJ Cook.. AC Guitar and vocals
Matt Cook..Telecaster and vocals

Also Todd Smith on drums but he could not attend..

These guys are really hip....

Currently we are seeking a new Bass player as our Leslie Turner ran away from us and moved to Oklahoma . Imagine that, we chased her out of the state !..I think it's because we never let her win at Pool...
