I am inquiring as to the OHMs a Rick 8 string PU would normally read.
I I have a CW 8 with a 6 string PU someone replaced before I got it and naturally it don't make the cut. I've got to get one in there that will work. I see TT makes a
8 string pu for gibson but I don't know if that will do. any suggestions? |

The problem is that Rickenbacker pickups don't have internal magnets like regular pickups. The "horseshoe" magnet wraps around the pickup and the strings. You would have to remove the magnet to install a TrueTone, Gibson or Fender-style pickup. That sort of destroys the classic look of the guitar.

Thanks bob, Now I am gett'in the vibe here .. I need a coil but what is the
OHMS ?? Does anyone have one of these they could measure and post the
results?? Also if anyone has a layout with thickness .. width and length
that would help me to design one that will come close to the original.
I realize I would be very lucky to find an original replacement .. TT can wind me
one if I know the spec's |

b0b, your half right the horseshoe is part of the magnet structure, but the pole pieces are also magnets too.

I measured three 8 string horseshoes from 1954 and they read: 6.50kohms, 6.70kohms, and 7.35kohms.
The 7.35 reading was taken with the pickup out of the guitar directly and the other two were read thru the output jack (which can alter the reading slightly). The structure is the same for six and eight strings except for the coil which appears to have the two extra polepieces installed on the edges of a six string bobbin. |
